A chain tool suffices. just take off the derailleur and the excess links.

When you are 30 miles from the car, it comes in handy. Believe me when I say this....it beats fooling with a chain tool, breaking a chain, removing the derailer and praying that some combination of gearing will give you SS. When you start playing on things other than the newbie trail Pcad, it will make sense. |
you all need to HTFU and sign the F up for the 1,200km Gold Rush Randonnee next year! i'll prolly be there.

Incorrect. Only 7 races this year. Mostly because I skipped a lot of local cirts to put in miles with my wife to get ready for Everest Challenge.
Heck, I'm the 632nd ranked Cat4 road racer in the country. I'll be you the cost of your trip to New York, which I'll front, that Pcad would take you in the Prospect Park races. |

WRONG about the slow part. http://www.granfondocycles.com/coolstuff?id=50067 I rode with Jeff Bauer this year. He's a RAAM finisher this year. He did RAAM duo FIXED gear. The last time I saw him he was geared and was cruising at 25+. Jeff Bauer would crush your soul before breakfast. His 2008 partner in RAAM is doing 2009 RAAM solo. Kevin Kaiser is his name. Heck...the Gran Fondo women would crush most of the guys on this forum. It took almost 90 miles before the last female fondo rider was kicked out of a 4:33 century. |

blotto, it's ok to be scared of long distance riding. most roadies are, so you're not alone in this. |
You are confusing scared with having a life. Riding a long distance is not a big deal.
