Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think being a girl has a lot to do with it. On occasion motorists are polite to me but mostly they seem hurried. I do my best to allow them their space and coexist on the road. It's all we can do. When gas prices shot up to $5 there were a lot more bikes on the road.

On brevets you either pack it or buy it. You are given a route sheet and off you go. Typically 2 or 3 checkpoints and typically at a convenience store.

I tried my hand at USCF this year and wasn't very good. I have been doing Ultras for 6 years now and I'm all slow-twitch.

True. Very true. My wife hasn't had nearly as many run-ins with A-hole motorists I have (by percentage). Coexist is a good word. It's a nervous and somewhat twitchy coexistence here. You don't want to do anything to piss off the wrong motorist. They might shoot you here. (Omaha is experiencing an all-time high for gun violence - the city council is meeting right now to try and find a way to curb this.)

And it only takes ONE mistake by a driver that's a little tired or doesn't really see you. Your risk are greater at night period. No reason to disturb the Bike Gods. When it's dark, stay off the bike. Period.
I find the opposite to be true.. When I ride at night, the total number of cars on the road is significantly less than during daylight hours.. With a good taillight, coupled with a good high power headlight makes it fairly safe.. Just being on the road puts us at risk, if you are smart about it, you can make night riding very safe.

I have had far fewer problems riding at night over riding during daylight hours.. Cyclist in general get little respect on the road. I have lost count of how many times I've been cutoff and the driver saying " I just didn't see you"..

Lots of great stuff for night riding at Night-Gear.com

Well, the city council made a small step in the right direction. They are allowing people to pawn unregistered guns for cash. The catch is that the guns must be then registered before being sold again.

Hey, don't sell yourself short, you had some real potential in the races I saw you in, especially dash for cash and LA circuit race.

Really? I don't know...I doubt they make the split second decision to not be an ass when they see the long hair. I don't know. Maybe I'm naive and assume that people are decent most of the time.
