Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

+1 I have four dealers within 30 minute drive, but what's interesting is I have only seen 1, yes 1 cervelo bike, out racing this year.

They ride great. I'm heavily considering one.

What's not to love? Excellent designs, nice color schemes, and the S series are just darn sexy/speedy. I chose the S1 over a carbon bike and am very happy with it. Cervelo haters? Jealous. :-)

Cervelo=the lululemon of bikes.

Both are from Canada, both are expensive, both have a cult-like following. But I would love to get a Cervelo after I build up a Surly in a few months after I get a gainful job as my "serious" bike.

Hi,

Since I posted so much in the original incarnation of this thread, I suppose I should post in the epilogue. I got and built up a Cervélo R3 in January 2009:

I raced on it for about a year but for the first time in 30-some-odd seasons of racing, I bought a bike that didn't handle very well in criteriums. I don't know if it was how I sat on the bike. I set up all of my road bikes identically with respect to how I sit over the bottom bracket and how I reach the handlebars.

Whatever the issue, the front end would lose traction at cornering limits way before the back of the bike. The last time I raced it last spring, the front end washed out so badly in a crosswind corner that I almost rode it into the outside curb. It must have something to do with the very short front-center dimension which is not compatible with where I need to sit with respect to the bottom bracket.

I replaced it with a Lapierre Xelius:

The Lapierre corners well within what I expect from a racing bike. However, it is a pretty middle-of-the-road bike. It is somewhat light (14.9 lbs as shown), it has pretty neutral handling, and it rides smoothly enough. Anyway, the punch line is that I just bought a new, 2010 Cannondale SuperSix Hi-Mod. It's the bike that I really wanted last year but couldn't find at a reasonable price. I'll have it built in a few weeks and I'll post some shots of it in the race rig thread.

That's funny that you think 14.9 lbs is only "slightly" light.

In this day and age it kind of is...and "somewhat" light isn't a knock (at least I don't think so). UCI limit is 14.99 pounds. Super light bikes <13 pounds tend to have other issues around handling and durability. I added a little of weight back to my main/race bike to address some handling issues...it's at 13.4 pounds right now, as a frame of reference (pun not intended).

The frame design of the two bike look almost the same wonder if the difference is in the front fork or in the mind?

2010 56 Cervelo RS showed up on the Excel email specials this morning. $2100 with free shipping. I assume the older mail order stock is getting harder to find.

If this helps someone, you're welcome.

Like my golfing buddies, who will never be on the pro tour and no pretensions about it, they've kept up to date on the latest "non-legal" clubs as they feel it ups their game and the enjoyment of it. Likewise here, I suppose - we'll never race, so more power to them in the pursuit of happiness and their sub-15lbs bike. For me, I stuck with "legal" clubs, and my bike sits just a hair over 15lbs. Not a Cervelo, but happy nonetheless.

Nobody enforces UCI weight regulations around here unless it is a State Championship race or such. That being said my Cervelo is nearing on getting under 13lbs, and my race was won last week by a guy with a R5CA, on Lightweights, and Super Record 11. His bike was probably sub 11lbs, and upwards of $25k. My other bikes are "legal", but my race weapon Cervelo is well under the weight 6800g mark. It's 770g under as it sits. When you race with people willing to build bikes w/o any concern for being fiscally responsible, you do what you can.

I am very happy with mine and plan to buy the updated S3 as soon as it is available. My SLC-SL with Di2, quarq, and Zipp 404's is way ... way fun to ride.
