I passed this memorial today for a cyclist killed recently on this mid-town corner. I thought I'd be able to read the placard on the photo, but it's a cellphone photo and the resolution is too low. It is a rather poignant.

It is poignant...
When we were doing those Random NYC Night rides, I found myself saying a prayer when I see each one; there aeem to be so many on the west side and even through Central Park. Air knows the gent that actually does the ghost bikes...
...these folks are gone but not forgotten.

I commute past a ghost bike to and from class each day. Very sad. She was hit by a drunk driver (a Navy ROTC officer) early in the morning. He had just turned 21 and was way over the limit. He did some community service... that's about it.

my nice bike is at home
There are two Ghost bikes on the West side Bike path (it is A BIKE PATH ! !) Nowhere is truly safe from the rabid tow truck or the stray drunk driver. So be careful. One victim was a Doctor. The other an NYU grad only in his early 20's
I usually just hold my fist to the sky for 7 seconds and continue on my way.

There are quite a few of those ghost bikes around here. It's kind of sad to hear about how cyclists get killed on these streets.

someone stenciled "A CYCLIST DIED HERE" in red on the road right where it happened, which is very eery to ride over. here's a story about it. rip.

The most horrifying to me is the one on the West Side path where Eric Ng was killed by a drunk driver ON the Greenway, which is separated from car traffic by a 10 ft wide divider that includes curbs and shrubs.

Always sobering to see Amelia, Eric, Dr. C. H. Nacht, and Bronx Jon's ghostbikes while riding. And those of many, many others too. Too many.
There's usual an annual memorial ride in January. Date hasn't been announced yet.
