501

is the number of grams I need to lose to hit the UCI limit. Keep in mind, though, that the weight is with the RaceXLite aluminum clinchers and not my 404s.

edit: wait I think I messed my math up... UCI limit is 6.8kg, I'm at 7.3, thats a difference of only 500 grams. oops.

MONGO! 11-21-08 07:39 PM

How heavy is the CAAD9 frame?

I've seen a few 15lb CAAD9 builds, not bad for a frame you can pick up for $400

MrMittens 11-21-08 07:40 PM

Everyone congratulate this man on his really light bike. He obviously possesses uncanny cycling. . .

Holy ****, that's a CAAD frame? That's actually kinda amazing. Nice.

bdcheung 11-21-08 07:41 PM

1250 grams, I think. Somewhere in that ballpark.

I can definitely hit the limit if I:
- Replace the SRM with another crank
- Slap on the carbon tubulars
- Edge 2.0 fork (or 1.0 if it ever comes out)
- Red shifters

You can cut the thomson post.

it's KCNC, and yeah now that I've gotten properly fitted to the bike I could probably cut it. I'm not sure there's much to cut though, but good idea.

woodrow5 11-21-08 08:24 PM

oh ... 7.30, unit is Kg... i thought that is pounds...

that would be miraculous. or user error.

In pounds, the bike hits 16.1

carpediemracing 11-21-08 08:31 PM

I wear 550s myself. That's what I thought the thread was about, and since I just bought two more pairs, I figured I'd post my jean preference. heh.

Your bike is very light, considering the (non-BB30) SRM, non "light" wheels, CAAD9 frame. I have the same post and pedals, similar stem, probably heavier bars and seat, but I have lighter wheels. And I think my bike is about the same weight. Hm. I'll have to weigh my bike again.

My weight weenie-ism has been more a hobby than a goal, and this is the first time I've ever weighed the bike. I was pleasantly surprised to see the results :)

oops, didn't look close enough. But yeah, there's a few grams to lose there probably anyway. The wheels and crank alone though would do it.

Any thoughts on a good lightweight crank? I was looking at the K-Force Lite since it shares the same BB

Exit. 11-22-08 07:58 AM

Now do it with a steel frame. Then I'll be impressed.

I'll bet it could be done...

Yes it could in theory. But it'll cost a whole lot. Practically though, I was working on a project to get a steel Fondreist down to 17lbs and had the plans all done to get it there. I instead dropped the project for a whole new frame and build.

Jynx 11-22-08 08:16 AM

Is there a reason you want to be 6.8kg with those wheels and not the 404's? If you then put on the 404's you would be under the limit. (not that anyone checks in local races)

Cutting the seatpost might save 10-20 grams depending on how much you cut but I dont think that is worth it.

Can you post the full build specs? I am curious of all the components on there.

Do it. And win a race on it. You will receive +132943 internet-cool points, courtesy of internet denizen Exit.

I don't have a goal of hitting 6.8. In fact I only weighed the bike out of curiosity. None of the races around here have enough elevation to warrant a superlight bike - the reason I built this one up with the weight weenie components is because as I built up my commuter, many parts from my race rig went over to the new frame and I just figured to replace the components with lighter ones.

If you supply the $$ I'll build the bike. Probably won't ever win a race on it, though.

MIN 11-22-08 08:53 AM

Carbon wheels are the only realistic way to lose that much weight. Boutique cranks might be the next way. I lost over one pound switching to carbon tubulars and over 1/2 pound switching to Stronglight Pulsion ti-spindle cranks.

Your bike is already pretty light and well thought out.

Hey man, you're the one riding a 16 pound piece of several thousand dollar plastic, and I'm the one riding a 24 pound steel beast. My pedals cost more than I paid for the rest of the bike.

ps: Your setup has aluminum bars. Couldn't you lose weight by switching to carbon?

Jynx 11-22-08 08:58 AM

You already have a lot of light components. Trying to get 500g off that will be pretty expensive. Really only leaves wheels, crank, and maybe fork.

bdcheung 11-22-08 09:05 AM

With the 404's and steel skewers, the weight is 7.09 kg

schnabler1 11-22-08 09:06 AM

Weight weenies are amusing.

ninjaman 11-22-08 09:11 AM

Have you weighed the fork? I have a feeling it's in the 430g range, you could definitely drop 100g+ on that pretty easily.

NoRacer 11-22-08 09:13 AM

Does the bike race by itself? Kewl!

It's Aluminum.

WeightWeenies lists the uncut weight at 425g, I'm a bit below that as the steerer has been cut. If I went with the Edge 2.0 fork (335g) I could lose probably 80g. But that's very low on the list of priorities right now.

Of course it doesn't.

ninjaman 11-22-08 09:31 AM

With an Easton EC90 SLX(<300g) or a Look HSC5 SL(<300g), you could drop even more.

are there any concerns over stiffness with either of those forks? Despite appearances I *do* value function over form.
