Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How about a little bit of slack for the newbies? Remember, what you guys think of as friendly ribbing can be pretty intimidating at times to a newbie. You know you aren't trying to be over the top nasty, but do they? Remember that perception = reality, and there are no clues to indicate that you're teasing we normally use since this is a text base form of communication. No facial clues or body language.

Remember, I'm trying to help you folk out in preserving the edge you like, so how about helping back a bit and cutting the newbs some slack and teach instead of doing a dogpile?
+1

One point, newbies, aren't going to be like us and by familiarity of coming here day in and day out know what and where everything is. They might not know what a 'sticky' is or even that they should be looking for one. They could just jump in.

Point 2 - I don't think this guy was trolling. Accusing him of being a troll might be a rationalization for giving him a hard time though?

Point 3 - part of me can't help but wonder if the phenomenon of blasting newbies hasn't been created somewhat by Bikesdirect's shill sales tactics?

This forum was far worse before Internet Brands took over. Anyone not a regular who posted got flamed; it wasn't the actual inflammatory posts that bothered me, some were deserved. It was the fact that it was a social club and people were trying to out do each in the insult/flame department.

Anyway, this is a pretty mellow board, I didn't see anything wrong with in that post.

You want insensitive? Go to SomethingAwful.com, Tribalwar.com, or any other gaming/internet forum. Those forums actually have egged people on who threatened suicide (no joke) a few times its happened. I wish I was making this up. This is the most recent one:

Dayum...what a fur ball.

I only got two things to say:

1. To the a-holes, LTFU
2. To the wussies, HTFU

Oh, I forgot...to Pcaddyo, carry on.

Sorry, but that's just the way I see it.
+1,000. Honestly, do you really think the replies people gave were harsh? Here are the replies to a thread titled "Judge my bike pls":

1. You real need to fix your handle bar alignment. It hurts to look at.
2. Good lord. Do you not notice slight discomfort while riding? Have you ever seen another bike before?
3. since you asked, I think it's a stupid idea and the reason you probably wan to replace them is because, as others have pointed out, you current bar setup is fail. Did you adjust it to be like that, or did you buy the bike that way?
4. The wheels don't match. That's a party foul.
5. Might as well get the horns - its obvious you don't use the drops. Plus, chicks dig horns.

At this point he got upset. After asking for people to judge his bike.

Have you ever played sports? Had a coach? Played a little of ANY game (poker, basketball, fishing, warcraft, whatever)? Been in the military? Anything at all that requires a little jabbing?

I really think we're taking politically correct wayyyy to far here.

I think these comments are soft compared to what would happen if he asked a group of roadies for advice face to face.

I happen to enjoy reading the open hostility expressed in the Road Cycling forum.
The thought of insecure over-compensating lycra clad men expressing their self-hatred by typing away behind the anonymity of the internet makes it all the more hilarious.
Carry on!

I'm gonna take a stab at the replies you'll get to this post:

1) Nooooo, at a group ride everyone is nice and friendly.
2) You might be right, but this isn't a group ride - this is BikeForums, a loving place filled with smiles, sunshine and rainbows. Everyone should be nice.
3) WTF do you know? STFU.
4) HTFU
5) The comments may have been comparatively soft but that doesn't make them nice on an absolute scale.

to name a few...

SomethingAweful / Fark and the like are a completely different beast than a cycling forum. And those forums are the only who have had suiside posts, fyi.

I disagree with your statement that it was worse before IB took over. I don't recall that at all, and I was an active mod here through most of that time period between when you registered and now. We had problems, sure. But it didn't seem as wide spread and aimed at anyone and everyone as it is now (imho).

I don't care how friggin nice you are, that doesn't mean you'll be slower than me. You have to be pretty fat, old and out of shape to be slower than me.

I don't race, I only ride (if I'm lucky) 3k miles a year. Most of my rides I finish with an average of 17-17.5ish mph if I'm lucky. I've done 18-19ish mph average rides, but not often. I'm in reasonable shape, but probably can't climb with you since I don't have anything around here to climb as experience / practice. What climbs are around here I do well on compared to other riders at my level. And then there's the month long recovery from surgeries I get to have at least once a year it seems. But I'm content with my riding. I ride when I want to, I ride with people fast enough I am challenged but can still function for the rest of the day after my ride, and I don't feel that the people around me are either too aggressive or too newbish to do something stupid which will result in me and my bike tumbling across the pavement at any moment.
