Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Some people appreciate bikes as something more than a thing that gets you from A to B. The craftsmanship and artistry that goes into building a bike can also be appreciated and that is something you can get attached to.

I'm with 55/Rad, too.

People who don't get attached to their bikes obviously are (a) too young to appreciate what they have OR (b) didn't work hard enough to get what they have OR (c) simply have the wrong bike.

I've bought or acquired and sold numerous bikes, but that was business. My personal bikes... I work hard to get them, and they and I have shared many good times (and not-so-good times, too). I understand them, and while I don't attach a personality or name to them, they are a part of my life.

The personal bikes I have sold -- I've regretted it.

There are some things that man builds that are somehow more than the sum of their parts. They have value and appreciation that's more than just the dollars they cost. Gliders and aircraft are like that, so is a crafted bike.

I don't get emotional over things. I've had a lot of cars and bikes and some motorcycles, they are just things. Yes, Rowan, I work hard for the money as an auto mechanic and I am old enough to know at 54. Don't get me wrong, I love riding my bikes but if something happened to them I could get new ones that will do the same thing.

I might have fond memories of things I've done on bikes, but, I can't recall one that I miss.

I am attached to my wife, to my kid, to our dogs. But to call an inanimate object "baby"? I'll never understand that.

I only regret getting rid of an object if I later realize I could have still used it.

I was in a similar situation. The mother of the babies still won't talk to me.

My two road frames I will admit to a pretty strong attachment to, but I think I fall in a middle ground.

One's just a simple Specialized cro-moly Allez frame, but it was my first road bike and I'm keeping that sucker until the tubes rot out from under me. The Trek OCLV still has some of the best ride qualities I've ever felt on a bike.

That being said, if they stopped being useful (carbon lugs break, get some nasty rot in the Specialized frame) I'd move on and find something else without being too beat up. Its still just a thing. But for me, those things are ingrained in a lot of happy memories I have with friends/racing/group rides/wrenching/etc.

Yep, finding and building up or updating that long sought after frame/bike kind of builds a bond between man and machine.

It's not the same as rolling it out the LBS door.

And we humans don't poop?..... every creature has a place. They feel pain, affection, remorse, etc. Just because we can talk does'nt make them any less in having a place on earth.

I personally am leaving all my money to the world wild life fund and local SPCA's.
Humans are the most devious, diabolical, insidious, non-trusting dots on earth.

Before I went into engineering in college, I took a few pre-med courses, thinking I wanted to help people............Nah.

Just me. Not words to live by.

I'm sorry to hear that you are suffering some of the economic pain that is spreading rapidly across the country. Sadly I don't think it will be getting better anytime soon. In fact I will probably be much worse in the coming months.

All of us who have enjoyed the disposable income it takes to buy expensive bikes will soon realize just how expensive our passion had become. Take care of what you have now, it may take a long time to replace it.

Just because other things take priority doesn't mean you can't appreciate something as more than a mere tool. Me being attached to my bike in no way effects other higher priorities. If I had to sell it to help a family member etc, it would be gone in a second

For every seller, there's a buyer. I'm buying. Although at this point, I'm starting to think I'll probably sell a frame or two before I build them up. I mean, how many Italian road bikes can you have in the garage?

Ask that question in the C & V forum and they'll first ask, "how big is the garage?"
