What REALLY changed your riding for 2008?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My 2008 changes resulted in LESS riding. New Child + Having to work two jobs = Being off the bike for months at a time.

What REALLY changed my riding for 2008?

Well ... that would be my decision to focus on my education (and acquiring money for my education) rather than gallivanting all over the world doing ultra-distance events.

Therefore, my longest distance this year was only 300 kms ... a 300K brevet.

1) Little lights. Started some night riding.
2) Found some nice routes around home, thanks to gas prices.
3) Increased my count from one female online stalker to 3........

Azusa Canyon Road. 12-15 mile climb averaging 7-12% grade going straight up. This alone developed my appreciation, respect, and skill of the whole climbing aspect of cycling. Because of this, I was able to conquer pretty much any So Cal hills encountered during group rides and centuries in 2008: Pacific Island (Aliso Viejo), Torry Pines (La Jolla), Solvang, Mount Baldy (Upland), etc.

Hi EDR,

You write that like it's a good thing.

Racing a lot (again for the first time in many years) changed my riding. I hope to have the ability and time to do it again.

Those who had a lifestyle change that changed their riding and their life, congratulations!

My first Big-boy bike, a Cervelo Soloist. It's a stock Team version, so other than the frame it's not super swish or anything, but it's a huge difference in stiffness from my '03 OCR3. It's too much bike for me, that's for sure.

Racing lots. It took me four years from my first race to get through Cat 5. And then I did 14 races this year. I don't expect it'll take four years to get to Cat 3.

Almost dying.

Realizing that I loved riding more than any other sport I'd ever sucked at, and getting back on the horse. You guys helped with this, so thanks.

Being given an SRM and realizing that I was stronger than I thought and I could continue to improve if I spent time on the bike training and time off the bike learning how to train better.

Pcad, does that count as HTFU?

Riding, learning, nothing too dramatic, just taking the steps.

The Velodrome changed how I think about racing. I love the track.

I raced a lot this summer. Went from a 4 to a 3.
Got a powertap this fall and a coach a week ago. Hopefully a real training plan will help next year.

That right Mr. Beanz. It is Hwy 39 (aka San Gabriel Canyon Road) from West Fork all the way up past Crystal Lake.

Sounds like you have already done it so you know what I am talking about. Breathless Agony and Mullholland Challenge? I'll take both of them on in 2009!

I started riding in 2008, road riding in July, thousands of miles later nothing can keep me off a bike. So for me 2008 was the beginning.

I also found BF this year, and realized how profoundly time can be wasted.

2008 had ups and downs for me. Toward the end of summer, I felt like I was sitting on top of the world. I felt lean, mean and fast. I was pedaling four times a week. Then I tore my hamstring. I'm in rehab now.

Coming from nycross to MABRA and loving every minute of it. Picking up my first podium finish in any sport at any level and knowing I had so much more.

Until today, it had been three months since I took two consecutive days off the bike. I'm starting a business that will put me on a bike six hours a day five days a week. I can't wait for 2009.

I know what it's like to be out due to injury.

Trust me, it makes it so much sweeter to get back on. You have more determination than ever before.

My truck broke down...

A bunch of old friends started racing, decided that when I move back to Tucson I want to hop on and start racing with them soon in 09.
