Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My last ride of '08 was 30 miles in 25 degree temps. It was sunny with little wind compared to yesterday. Today was 28 miles, 1.5 hours.

The 28 miles today put me at 1801 miles since I bought my bike in late June. Plan to do 5000 miles next year.

Broke something in my right campy shifter yesterday. I have to wait until Friday for it to be repaired.
Plus I busted my Audi A6 too. No car. No bike. But I will be drinking later, so.... I got that going for me.

I put in my might morning 18 with about 1k feet of climbing. Not much, but every little bit counts right?

An easy 15 mile spin in mid 50's temps with deadly wind gusts. Guess it was better than no miles at all.

So long 08.

28 mile tempo ride yesterday in 70F sunny weather. No wind to complain about, either.

Living in SoCal definitely lowers your HTFU factor.

Yesterday: 47km. It has warmed up considerably and roads are mostly clear of snow, except shoulders are piled high.

Set the computers back to 0 tonight; New Year's Day ride tomorrow.

lake wa blvd, scenic as ever:

there was some snow on cougar at about 700 feet:

and some debris on the lower section:

hope everyone had a good year, 'cause i sure did.

My last ride for the year would be yesterday morning. 42 miles early in the morning, as usual, before work. Saw 5 cars the entire times and almost got hit by 3 of them!! WTF?? At least I ended the year in one piece with no accidents or falls. Tomorrow is a new day, new year, and new chance to do it again!

It's been somewhere between -20C and -40C all month ... plus snow and ice.

My last ride of 2008 was on November 30th.

I had a horrible ride yesterday, I didn't get enough sleep the night before and didn't eat right the day of, I felt sluggish and uncomfortable, worst ride ever. I decided to take today off and start the new year right with fresh legs.

A mellow, short ride for me. I was feeling grouchy most of the day due to long list of small yet annoying chores, and the weather being fantastic but with me not on a bike. So I snuck out for a 22mile ride up Pinehurst (Moraga/Canyon) and down Shepherd Canyon (Oakland) to Montclair - a nice easy 40mph descent, which could be faster if one tried. Stopped in at an LBS and then climbed back up Shepherd Canyon for the first time - not a bad little climb, I'll be trying to get to know some more of the bayside climbs to the Berkeley/Oakland ridge in 09.

These 20-30mile rides have been order of the day for me lately with relatives in town and multiple activities to take care of. A bonus though was that I didn't need my knee warmers and just had a short sleeved jersey and arm warmers today. I swear I'm faster without all that extra stuff on.

20 miles on my usual bread and butter route with a slight modification near the end, up Scenic Drive. Happy New Year. (Hmmm, wonder if I can make it to 800 posts for 2008...)

It warmed up into the 50s today. I rode from my suburb to our club's year end ride south of denver.
A nice ride with good people.
It was also a dry run for my commute with my new lights.
1200 lumens = me comfortably riding at 20mph instead of holding back.

A short 17 miler on the old Cannondale SR500. It felt good, but I'm out of shape and felt it.

It was a nippy 68° F this Dec. 31st, PLUS I had to work for 6 hours today. Looks like it won't be warming up to 80 in Daytona Beach until at least a few days after the new year kicks in, so no riding for me until then.

dittos on the cloudy and cold. 30ish miles at 40 deg. Headed towards the hills to escape the fog/clouds. Headed northeast from Roseville towards Auburn. Found the sun somewhere just past Lincoln, lost it shortly there after.

All in all, a good way to the year.
