Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Did my usual 21.5 mile loop on the Intrepid today:

https://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/7361803

Weather was a cool 57-60F. SportTracks says that I rode 4,160 miles in 2008. New Years Resolution: 5,000 miles for 2009!

Happy New Years Everyone!

I did 57 miles today, the most since I started riding again in February, and perhaps the most I've ever ridden in a day. Temperature was ideal- 50 degrees when I started, less than 60 still when I finished. There was a wind out of the northeast to contend with at 10-15 mph for the whole ride, but on the legs when I was downwind the going was awesome. I did the mileage in about 4:15 of riding time (5 hours minus meal/rest stops which I figure came to 45 minutes), which is a little over 13 mph. For many of you, that would suck, but for me, to sustain that over 50 miles, well, I'm pretty pleased with that. I should also point out that I did the ride on a 25-year-old bike I pulled out of a dumpster a week before Christmas. A map of my route is here.

Fixing it now ... 5,000+ miles for 2009!

Juggling a full-time job, running a consulting business on the side, weight training 3x a week on non-riding days, and spending time with my two little girls and a stay-at-home wife ... had to factors these against my riding hours. Living the American dream buddy and trying to get in the miles in. At least I am thankful for having a wife who fully supports my new lifestyle.

20min commute from work on my old mtb that is riding like a backwards 3 speed.

the RD isn't working atm, and only the FD is...at work there is an abandon(for the past 10days) mtb with decore lx. omg that would be an upgrade, and lock would take 30seconds to cut with wire cutters, or 3min to figure out the combo, bad desgin lock. did i mention my brakes don't work, been using foot on tire method for stopping. pretty sure i'd need whole new cantileaver brakes to fix the problem. nope, got no money. life is a beautiful strugle.

Hello,

Last ride was a bit disappointing. Planned to do 50 EASY miles. Woke up with a slightly scratchy throat and saw that it was a very foggy 45 ºF.

Waited for the fog to burn off but it never totally went away. Headed south and I was cold and the fog was rolling in off the ocean. Turned around when I saw 12.5 miles on the computer.

Stopped at the LBS on the way home to pick up a couple of things for the new bike. Computer read 26 miles when I got home.

If I'm feeling better and if the weather is better then I'll start the new year with a metric century.

Last ride of 2008

Hi all:

I am new to BF, as of today. My last ride of '08 was Tuesday 12/30. I live in Central Illinois and Tuesday was 44 degrees, 20 mph SSW winds, but sunny. I rode a very hilly route (hilly for Central Illinois), 20 miles. I havent ridden this route for about a month. It was really nice. For the last month, I had been riding an 11 mile route with several rolling hills on a single speed, so I could wear mittens and not have to shift. Other gear included a windproof skull cap, baselayer, longsleeve poly shirt, windproof vest, goretex windbreaker, Desoto trishorts under heavy poly tights, Defeet wool Blaze sox, and Pearl Izumi Shine shoe covers--very cozy. The temps have been in the 20's with 15-40 mph winds. It was a real treat to ride in what felt like Spring weather.

I am very impressed with the rides and riders described in this thread.

Nursing a hamstring injury I did 10 miles yesterday and 10 miles today. I"m coming back strong in 2009. I'm hoping to be banging out 50 or 60 within the next 6-8 weeks.

Last ride of 2008 got me over 4,000 miles for the year. Wall of wind out of the north made the return home pretty special. Rode with three guys to cap off a great year on the bike.
