Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm glad you aren't expecting any sympathy, because I'm not you deserve any - except from your mom. Take the woman with the bucket out of the story. You went around a blind curve (where does this curve exist on the bike path near Hermosa?) too fast to avoid the unhappy consequences.

Imagine another rider, just in front of you, has rounded the same curve and gone down first, for whatever reason, hers or someone else's. Maybe she's slipped on the water, or hit a pedestrian, or the cleaning lady accidentally tossed the water and the bucket onto the other rider's head. Then you come 'round and plow into this downed rider. Who's fault then? If you couldn't avoid a potential hazard on a blind curve, then you were going too fast to complain about crashing.

Of course, if it had been me who'd crashed, I'd probably be making the same comments you have.

On a side note (to those quick to point out I deserve it for riding on a bike path)
I ride the road almost exclusively. But when the road is this fked up, and there is a perfectly good bicycle only path right there, I can see how drivers would think WTF if I insisted on riding through the traffic jam.
Cycling advocates worked hard to secure a safe bike only path, why not use it when it makes sense. (I'm not talking about riding 20 mph during a weekend, wizzing past children. This was mid day on a week day, almost deserted)

Sigh.

Where, exactly?

For the life of me I can't picture a "blind curve" anywhere near that end of the bike path, let alone one that would require you to slow to 8mph.

Sigh...its there. I'm not going to start posting maps and **** to pacify all you haters.
Btw speed limit on whole bike path is 8 mph.

Let's revisit this discussion when you're the one laid out on the pavement eh?

You have a 2006 join date, so I assume you know the drill around here. I think you timed your posting correctly, and if you're lucky it'll be off the 2nd page by morning.

8mph speed limit? are you sure? if that's the case I'd steer completely clear. No bikes only path (as you've described it) that I've ever seen has anything that ridiculous.

Most of us have wrecked. Sometimes it's been someone else's fault. From your story this wreck is YOUR FAULT. Haters or whatever, you came around the curve and couldn't slow down, and didn't have the presence of mind to ride straight through the slick stuff w/o losing your wheels. You posting to complain about it and expecting anything less than the ****storm that comes gives me another reason to question your judgement.

Honestly the lady was dumping cleaning products on the public bike path! I am not sure how people can blame the OP. Does he need a better handling skills? Probably, but that is a far cry from this being his fault.

why didn't you immediately rip out her heart, eat it in front of her as she watched in dying horror, and then leave her head on the employer's doorstep with a stiff warning?

why such a minor reaction to such a heinous crime?

you could have broken a fingernail.

first: steer with your bars next time

second: what are you doing on a 8mph path? you'd have to be in the little ring of a triple or something...

8mph is like a fast track stand. I admit I've never ridden in soapy water, but I ride in the rain all the time in the summer, and oily roads get really slick just after the rain starts. It would never occur to me to ride that slow in conditions like that.

Boo hoo is right.
I definitely think it's time for us wealthy cyclists to rise up against the working class.
Dumping soapy water in the street is the way it goes in most of the world.

You were riding a bike. She spent her day cleaning someone else's house. She probably walked away because she was scared. What was the real problem for you? Was it that you fell, or was it that you fell in the presence of unsympathetic foreigners?

how about all the shattered bottles below the underpasses? i love the sart, but unfortunately it's also a highway for morons.

Did this happen at the sharp corner turning onto the beach near the intersection of Herondo Street/Hermosa Ave?

i'm on board with the rest of your story, it sucks that you fell.

what is completely ridiculous is that it even went through your mind to call the police. I'm pretty sure the LA area cops have more important business than scolding a cleaning lady.

how about taking the high road, i'm sure she didnt realize the hazard of dumping soapy water on the path - i bet she wont do that again after watching you crash. Maybe call her employer as a public service, but certainly not the police...

Cool your jets, dude, I'm on your side. I ride that path at least once or twice a week, on average. I just wanted an actual location so I can know where to look out for crazy cleaning ladies.

I realize you just fell over and all that, and I know that's extremely aggravating. But for an engineer, you're not very detailed oriented.

BTW, the only thing close to a mandatory 8mph speed limit is on the Strand between Manhatten Beach Blvd. and Herondo/Hermosa Ave. Othewise, there is no posted speed limit for bikes anywhere else on the bike path from MDR to PV, AFAIK.

FWIW, I won't ride on that section of the Strand, (preferring to Hermosa Ave.) unless I just have need for better scenery. Too many obstacles. The street's much better, IMO.

I'm sorry you crashed but you and the other 'crashed at slow speed on a bike path' guy need to learn some bike handling skills. I know you live in sunny California and don't have much experience with slippery stuff but it's still only water. At least it's not ice and snow.

Go get a mountain bike, learn to ride it and your issues with crashing on damp bike paths, roads, etc will be a thing of the past

The OP is noob, we've all been there, hopefully next time he decides to ride his road bike on an 8ph bike path around a blind curve with soapy water he'll make it through with no incidents.

The only bike path that passes washington/venice is the bike path on the venice board walk, not the greatest place to ride. The bike path in the marina is the one that links washington to fiji way and is way worse than the road.

Yes it is. Business's are not allowed to even dump water by itself in California. Zero discharge period, and dumping on the bike pathetic. Turn em in.
