Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

yeah I know the drill and I can take it
Like I said thanks for the supportive comments and here's my response to those quick to judge (aka "haters" "you")
sure, any crash can be faulted this way (theoretically if one is in total control all the time you should never ever crash right?) , and I'm not saying I'm faultless.
But if you saw the scene I'd think you'd agree that even if you were doing 4 mph and going dead straight, this soapy puddle that covered the whole width of the bike path was going to take out every other rider (or worse).
No traction whatsoever, any weight shift, turn, or pedaling and you're on your back...so yeah, I hear "you" but I think you're not really hearing me. It's not my lack of riding skills, its just the fact that I was clipped into and balancing on a machine that suddenly had no traction.
Like I said, it's all just the price of cycling, I know how to ride, it's just sh1t that happens, just sharing with the community here...
"you" can go ahead and write it off as an idiot rider or inexperienced cycler or whatever, but if it were at all possible I'd like to see 'you' try and avoid my predicament on this particular spot
For the record, I ride regularly, 3200 miles on this particular bike and this was my first accident.

And where, exactly, would that particular spot be?

c'mon Dscott, I told you in post#30 already I don't wanna have to start posting maps...
But what I meant in my last post above was the proverbial "spot" like in "tough spot" (It was if we could all go back in time to that moment and you switch places with me)
FWIW it happened in the Marina (where they park the boats) in Marina Del Rey. Ocean on your left (if you're riding north) chain link fence on your right, there's a hard right/jog by the boat house, before you cross the street to get on the bike path that runs parrrallel to the grass and parking spaces...can't explain it much better than that without going to a map...

Fyi...Hermosa is actually the only part of the path that is a MUP. That's why there's an 8mph speedlimit. I hate going through that part of the bike path. Especially in summer or the weekends. It's almost impossible to get through. Traffic is usually not bad at all in Hermosa beach except during rush hour. I almost always take Hermosa Ave. through Hermosa Beach. That's my sprint workout since there's a fair amount of stop signs as well. Sprint, stop, sprint, stop...

But I agree, too many idiots on the bike path. I've seen groups countless times walking shoulder to shoulder across the entire path. Really it even says "Bikes only" on the path.

I'm curious where this happened though. Was it the turn at I think 25th (i think it's that one) on the path towards the end that actually takes you off the path and onto the side of Hermosa Ave? Or is it the part at Herondo Ave. Where there is that intersting exit onto the other side of the road. I absolutely hate when people dump soap, dirt, etc. onto the path from their homes right on the strand.

Not trying to be a jerk, but you should just ride the streets right there. Fiji way turns left at the light to admiralty, if you want you can catch the bike path where it intersects at the light further down admiralty way.

That's exactly what I do...plus that part of the path is terrible because of the tree roots growing under.

Many of us ride on far worse stuff then 'soapy water'. Rain, snow, ice, sand, wet railroad tracks, wet paint strips, etc. are all par for the course in many parts of the country. 'Soapy water' is hardly slicker on a concrete surface than regular water...unless it contain an awful lot of oil or grease. Even on pavement, it's not that slick.

Just because your rear wheel loses traction doesn't mean that you are automatically going to fall off the bike. That's where the bike handling skills come in. The rear wheel of a mountain bike can spin, stop forward momentum entirely and yet, most of the time, the rider isn't going to end up in a heap on the ground. In those situations, my feet are are usually out of the clips and on the ground before I even have time to think about it. Same happens on ice and snow with a road bike or mountain bike. Heck, sometimes I even spin the wheel on slick stuff for ****s and giggles

Not hatin', just statin': If a stretch of wet pavement puts you on the ground with a wet bum and a bruised ego, you need to work on your handling skills. If nothing else, you saw it before you rode into it and should have taken some precautions.

That wasn't a cleaning lady FWIW...it was Pcad trying to perform a public service so you came to the right place to vent.
I don't crash much but my last endo also took place on a bike path...year before last, rounded a corner and a group of kids on BMX bikes decided to set up a jump right onto the path. I came around the corner and there was literally a kid in mid air I was about to collide with head first. Locked up my brakes to avoid him and went over the handlebars. Performed a tuck and roll and my bike did a few summersalts as well.
I didn't have much to say to the little kid really...was happy I didn't break my neck.
The unforeseen happens is all I can say...more a matter of when then if.
