Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Silver Shifter Lever with Shimano Bar-end Pod

First, please excuse my lack of understanding when it comes to bar-end shifting systems. Also, I've read a couple other posts that touch on this subject, but because I don't know the mechanics, I'm not sure if they answer my question:

Is it possible to use Silver Shifter levers (https://velo-orange.com/diacosish.html) on Shimano Ultegra bar-end pods in a way that retains both the Shimano friction and indexing options?

This is driven purely by aesthetics, not function. The Silver Shifter levers are far more attractive than Shimano's.

Thanks in advance for your insights.

Cheers,

Chris

Probably not, as those are downtube levers and designed to go on downtube bosses. In theory, you might get lucky and they might be able to mount to Shimano bar end mounting bits, but you'd be lucky and might lose some of the aesthetic appeal.

No, the indexing is built (or not built) into the lever. The pods are just a different base to mount them on.

Watch your step. Once you start making decisions based on aesthetics eventually you wind up facing a choice between ugly and more functional and better looking and less functional and you're going to go less functional because the ugliness will be too much to bear.

Let me help you with a push in that direction. Put the Silver shifters on the downtube where they belong and man-up and learn to shift friction.

I've seen shimano bar-end shifters mounted (upside down, natch) on downtube bosses, so I'm fairly certain that the converse would work, with downtube shifters mounted upside down on the bar-end pods. Note that the shifters are NOT reversed - the front shifter still goes on the left, and the rear shifter on the right. The levers are just flipped upside down (because the boss is on the opposite side of the lever).

It never ceases to amaze me how some need to pipe up with an opinion piece in response to a technical question.

You're right. I apologize. You asked a technical question, epenthetic answered it, and nothing I posted made any useful contribution to the discussion. Now let's get back to the thoughtful exchange of ideas that is the hallmark of the Road Cycling subforum.

I would suggest asking this in the Mechanic's forum if you haven't already. I have DA bar end shifters on 4 bikes and just recently re-cabled a couple sets, which means that I just had them apart. Going from memory here since I haven't installed a pair of down tube shifters in a long time, I doubt that it would work. I would certainly want verification from someone who has done it before I ordered levers.
