Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Built some new wheels (HED C2, DT Aerolites, PowerTap) and put Shorty Ultimates on my TriCross for Autumn/Spring road riding duties. The wheels will also go on my Roubaix when it comes back outside from winter trainer duty.

Sweet - is this your first experience with 23mm wide rims? How are you liking them? I'm thinking about them in the spring... or maybe a little earlier...

I have some 23 mm width tubular rims. Dig 'em

I had the tires on the stock TriCross wheels (Roval Pave - 21mm wide) for a bit, and they were OK. These wheels are quite a bit stiffer, and they do feel more planted than the stockers when cornering. I suspect that has more to do with the stiffness of the build than the width.

3T Mutant Quill Stem
Looks vaguely similar to the guy on the above photo. Ordered it online and hence do not have a photo of it installed on the bike.

Ah ok. If it's a hosted image, I know how to do that. Just thought it was something else. Looks too clean.

I got it for this bike:

I am going to upgrade the stem, bar and shifters (still the old stem on the photo). I bought the black Mutant, but am not completely sure, it was the right choice. The stem is as close to a tomahawk as something can be and could serve me as well as a weapon. Definitely not the lightest of stems, but otherwise it does have the look.

I still have no idea about the handlebar. I have checked several bars and while I was initially set to get a similar ergo bar I am now confident that a traditional drop would fit me better. I am now looking for a 26mm bar with traditional (or may be shallow) drop and short reach. Black color would be a plus, but not a necessity. I am definitely after a durable and quality bar and the budget is not my primary concern.

I am not in a hurry with the build. Want to have it ready by spring.

The new Rotor 3D+ BB30 Crankset. This is one of the first pairs to be introduced in the U.S. There were only 6 shipped. I got a pair and I believe the rest went to Garmin/Cervelo. Thanks to the great guys over at Rotor. I got a few sets of the Q-rings as well.

The final piece of my Bianchi Valle commuter drop bar conversion -- Shimano Tiagra 9sp brifters. I've decided to stick with Shimano (for now) and run it on both my road and commuter bikes. My other plan was to switch the roadie to Sram Red/Force and put its DA 7800 shifters on the Valle. But, I decided that such a big expense will wait until I decide to build up an "ultimate commuter" for myself (Ti frame, disc brakes, generator lighting, drops, fenders n' rack, etc), so I'll put as much mileage into the dropped Valle as I can.

Before:
https://www.bianchiusa.com/archives/2...rain/08-valle/

I'll post an "after" later, probably within a few days.
