Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I would like to see a Garmin mount that would connect as a spacer below the stem and extend out similar to a bar fly or k edge. It would be cleaner looking imho. A cursory google search shows top of stem spacer mounts, but no below stem extended ones.

And while everyone is different, I will say that the extension between my first barfly and the new one is about the same, but by having it mounted below (and in front) of the stem I do in fact have an easier time reading it without my prescription. I had played with angle a fair bit on the other mount to no avail.

I was thinking along the lines of this guy's solution, but it, of course, means that they would need multiple SKUs for different bolt spacings.

Is a Garmin worth the price? Is it worth it? Do you use it as a GPS or just to monitor your elevation/speed? Just curious how often you look at your Garmin while riding. I don't have one, never used one. Aren't there apps for your phone that do what the Garmin does?
- I'm asking since there is a Garmin 500 for $160 on Craigslist.

Yes. Yes. I use it to monitor speed/elevation and as a GPS to upload to Strava. I look at it quite often to see how fast I am going, how much I have climbed, and how far I have gone. I'd say I glance at it a couple times an hour. There are apps for your phone, but the Garmin will be more accurate and the battery life will be longer.

I use a Garmin Edge 200 as pictured in my avatar.

It can be used to monitor speed, distance, lap times, cadence, heart rate, power (if you have a meter), etc. Some can be used as to follow a route or to compete against a virtual riding partner. Phone apps can do most, if not all, of this, but they generally have poorer battery life and are not typically suited to exposure to foul weather. In my experience, accuracy on the phone was worse, too, but that was a couple phone generations ago. Whether or not it's worth it is up to you to decide.

Go put in 60 miles using your phone and an app and let me know how it goes...what's that, you can't...you say your phone died 15 miles ago. Oh, ok.

This has been my experience. Nothing quite as awesome as pushing yourself up a hill and expecting to see some personal bests only to have your phone die before you get home and lose the whole ride.

In my opinion, yes, absolutely worth the money. I haven't splurged (yet) on a power meter, but I constantly look at my heart rate and cadence when I'm out riding, and then looking at the analytics on the computer at home is just neat...and useful if you're looking to see where you can find time on a particular loop or how you're improving The only real problem that's common to the Garmin units is the barometric altimeter. There are ways to mitigate this (correcting elevation based on route on the computer), but I've found that while the actual values aren't very accurate out of my 500, the delta (which is what matters to me) is pretty much spot on.

Garmin 500 is totally worth it. Buy it, and pick up and heart rate strap and cadence sensor while you're at it. It really can change the way you ride.

I got the SRAM mount for $15, it works and is good and sturdy. not as integrated as that wacky looking stem, but ya know... $15...

I've got one, and it's a great, stiff stem. I think it looks good on the bike, especially when loaded up with an Edge 800, and I actually get a lot of compliments on it. It was definitely overpriced, but it was one of those "I gotta have it" things. On my other bike, I've got one of the new K-edge mounts with the plastic insert and it's awesome too. Looks great, and is probably more aero because it puts the garmin out at the level of the stem rather than above it. Both great products.

At the same extent, I have have several strava sections where I killed myself, knowing full well I beat my PR, only to get home and find out it didn't record or the path was all sorts of messed up. I prefer the Garmin, but its not always perfect for me.

I went this route as well. Love it!
Didn't feel the need for touchscreen, or cell tethering.

I don't even bother with Strava anymore, I just work off my own data.

OK. I will involve myself:

2014 C Super Six EVO Ultegra
FSA SLK stem, handlebar and carbon seat post.
Michelin Pro4 Service Course 23 mm tires
PI Pro bibs/windbreaker vest
Fizik ICS saddle
Garmin 200
Prices were all minimum %20 off except the bike. I got 15% off retail. (All these around Xmas time)

Today i got a sweet deal. I purchased Shimano Ultegra 6800 pedals through backcountry.com
Got the for $119.99 shipped (no tax and no shipping fees...2 day ship). The price matched Nash bar.
This price was at a few UK dealers, but got these same price and quick ship!

As do some bike computers, heck mine VDO even has the temp reading, and this one has the temp and the altimeter, not to mention HRM plus speed, distance, lap times, and other mumbo jumbo for just $92, see: https://www.amazon.com/VDO-2-0-Wirele...uter+altimeter

Or if you want downloadable ride info you can get what I got...except I got mine on a crazy sale for just $49 from Performance, see: https://www.amazon.com/VDO-Altimeter-...uter+altimeter No altimeter on that one though, but you can wear it as a watch to so if your a runner as well just strap it on your wrist.

I hear all this gab about the Garmin's, which is fine, but for a lot of people it's overkill, heck I know people here that don't even ride with any sort of computer. We each need to weigh out how much technology we're willing to except, and weigh out how much of that technology later becomes a useless toy. Personally I have no desire to have a Garmin, they don't react to changes in speed etc because the sat is not an instant relay, I like the fact I can wonder without a gps, part of riding a bike is having fun exploring new places and all a GPS will do is make the trip robotic and boring. I never cared about how much altitude I gained while climbing, I could see the road sign that said "elevation"!

It seems that my next purchase will have to be a longer stem as I am beginning to find myself hitting my handlebars when I sprint.

That's why you use a speed/cadence sensor.

While, I agree not everyone needs one, I'd never give up my 810. I don't use the gps function all that much, but it's an awesome feature when you're getting ready to do a century and you want to plan out your route ahead of time.

Having a live tracking feature is nice when your loved one doesn't quite know where you're going or when you'll be home.

And, I like technology...I like being able to see my speed and cadence along with degree of incline, etc. I also enjoy the fact that I can set up multiple profiles, one for road, one for fixed, one for mountain, and one for the trainer. I like being able to have one device for 5 bikes, that keeps track of the mileage for each bike. I also enjoy having my ride uploaded to the garmin connect website and strava automatically at the end of my ride.

Yes there are alternatives and yes garmin has a few quirks here and there, but for most of us, it's the ultimate cycling computer and for good reason.

Did you guys have any issues with the the loctited Torx screw to remove the pedal bodies from spindle? What'd you use to heat the screw?
