To everyone telling me to race: I am going next weekend to a race in Austin. My fiance thinks I'm going to come in last place but I think otherwise. Some confirmation to the contrary is nice.
To lazyrider: I live in the exburbs so the area I ride is free of pesky traffic for the most part or stoplights.

Well, I'm a cat 3 with a win and I just did a lousy 21mph average on my commute home. And I thought I was hammering.
The day keeps getting better.

I thought we established that 27 mph is the Official BF Average Speed.

Presumably races don't have too many dead stops like red lights and stop signs, so it wouldn't compare to a commute. If you can ride on a MUP at 25 mph for an hour without crashing into children, then you're probably pretty fast.

I can average over 40mph for ever and am thinking of entering the Dakar rally on my schwinn 10 speed...think I can do it?
Guads pic and another of me being arrested for being too fast in a Cat5 race...I was bummed...

Lance just rode 120 miles in 6 hours yesterday and I'm pretty sure he could hang with a cat 5 field..
What you need are training rides to work on bike handling skills in a pack at high speed.. This will serve you well when you start racing..

Exactly, it is possible but highly unlikely something that even a professional cyclist would set out to average on a solo ride. I mean, 25mph is pretty fast in a non-race situation and just on a daily training ride. 20mph is tough to "average" where I live simply based on congestion, lights and stops signs.

ppsh 20-25mph
i can hit that for an hour on those rehab bikes they put in pools at YMCAs
if you want to race cat5 you need to be able to crash for no reason at all
oh and dont forget that you must brake in every turn
that is all

Scrape a pedal every 3d or 4th corner, just to mix it up.

the term "on your left" should be used at any occasion
especially if you picked a tight line into the turn

I find there is a setting on my computer called "Cir" that allows me to average whatever I wish.
