20-25mph solo average speed, to slow for cat 5?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well, I'm a cat 3 with a win and I just did a lousy 21mph average on my commute home. And I thought I was hammering.

The day keeps getting better.

If you can average those speeds after a crash, then you have chances.

Sorry dude, maybe you're telling the truth, but I see that you joined BF in 2006, you already know the answer to your question.
If I'm looking for the Truth, I go to Fox News. The Truth has no place on BF.

I thought we established that 27 mph is the Official BF Average Speed.

Presumably races don't have too many dead stops like red lights and stop signs, so it wouldn't compare to a commute. If you can ride on a MUP at 25 mph for an hour without crashing into children, then you're probably pretty fast.

Correct.

BF is both unfair and unbalanced.

Lance just rode 120 miles in 6 hours yesterday and I'm pretty sure he could hang with a cat 5 field..

What you need are training rides to work on bike handling skills in a pack at high speed.. This will serve you well when you start racing..

I've seen several claims that breaking 4 hrs for a solo century is a good bar for world class road racers.

Scrape a pedal every 3d or 4th corner, just to mix it up.

the term "on your left" should be used at any occasion
especially if you picked a tight line into the turn

I find there is a setting on my computer called "Cir" that allows me to average whatever I wish.
