Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aargh! gluing tubulars

Just got finished gluing up a pair of tubulars. I've done this 50 times or more, but I never like it and I think I really am bad at it. Not in the mechanical way, since they've never rolled or anything, but in the method way, since I can't seem to keep the rim clean.

Any secrets for keeping the rim braking surface free of glue and saving the time of having to get the glue off the rim?

w/o telling us your proceedure- its a little difficult to critique (constructively)

do you stretch the tires before hand? use the floor and pull downward when mounting? etc etc etc

never used making tape. never had to.

I always put a thin layer on the rim and the inflated tire, let it dry overnight, then put a very thin layer on the rim and put the tire on. The new layer will soften the layer from the night before and bond them all together. At least that's the way I learned it years and years ago. As for stretching, sometimes I did, sometimes I didn't.

The way to keep from making a mess is to stretch the tire for at least two days, then when you put on the second coat of glue let it dry 10 to 15 min`s before mounting it.

When i lay the glue down on the rim i spread it with a small 1/2 inch brush. I did my back wheel
two weeks ago with next to non getting on the outside of the rim.

The way I was taught to do it is from the old Park Tool maintenance manual. I put on a couple of coats of glue on the rim, a coat on the base tape, let dry overnight. I put a final coat on the rim, and let it dry just a bit, then do the "downward stretch" with the tire.

I always pre-stretch by mounting the dry tire on the rim a day or so before mounting.

Sounds like some are letting the final coat dry longer than I am.

The glue doesn't have to be wet to work.

Let it dry COMPLETELY before mounting the tire.

I've glued hundreds of tires and never had one roll, never made a mess.

I'll be gluing my first tire to all carbon rims in about a week or so. It should be interesting.

Multiple thin layers, let them dry completely before mounting and you won't have any problems.

short term benefits- (easy and clean)

long term horror show- (stays really tacky so picks up dirt and debris for years, eventually gets a huge build up of new tape, and a god-awful mess to clean off to go back to a proper method (glue))

less than experienced shops love the stuff- as it makes them look like they know what they are doing- but leave the customer with a future problem.

last set i glued for a teammate- i pulled off 16 feet of cellotape off his rims before i could START cleaning them to glue.
