Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

They made them; they don't make them anymore.

That's because most of the distributors that supply those shops have been out of 7800 stuff for quite a while and they have been phasing out 6600 stuff for a while as well in anticipation of 6700....which BTW is in...and while I haven't priced it yet it actually looks like they matched or beat the pricing on 6600. Nice.

....but they're a day late and a dollar short. SRAM has pwnd Shimano.

Although I have always been a Shimano rider, I just bought the 2010 Force because the price was good and all I was hearing was how much more expensive 2010 Ultegra would be (couldn't even get a range or estimate from regional Shimano office). I would have waited for Ultegra if I knew what the price was going to be and if it was *about* the same as SRAM.

So, I just tested out the SRAM shifting, decided I could get used to that, and arranged an order.

Psimet has just posted it...

We have the Ultegra 6700 groupo in our shop now. Looks just like 7900 stuff, but the crank has a really cheapy feel and finish to it.

Shifters are almost identical to 7900, just a tad heavier.

Agreed on the crank...it's looks like something on a Sears or Wal Mart bike.

I really really don't like the shifting feel. nor that piece of metal they put in both DA and Ultegra right where you would have your fingers if riding on the hoods.

don't get me wrong, i do like the rival i have on my US bike, especially considering the price.

regardless, sram still has some odd quirks, i.e. on saturday there was a guy whose drivetrain was making a total racket. every time he shifted you could hear it from a few bikes away. i thought that maybe his cassette was loose. it wasn't until later that i realized he had red. you don't see much sram in NL (yet).
I do not ride a SRAM chain or casette. I use DA 7800 chain and casettes. Bike's silent, especially when I put the Zipp team wheels on that are totally quiet. One of the guys in the store, the first Red rider warned me about the SRAM chain being noisy.

I hear the cable routing is a clusterfark.

You really find the chain alone produces more noise with SRAM? I run a PC-1030 on my cross bike, which is using an FSA energy crank and CS-6600 cassette. That chain is running every bit as quiet as the Ultegra one it replaced.

Perhaps the SRAM noise only becomes pronounced with OG-series cassettes? Anyone run Ultegra/DA chains on an OG cassette?

Pedal Force specs an Ultegra chain with their 2010 Force group as part of the group buy. Not sure their reasoning. I'll be replacing with a KMC anyway so I can get a master link (I hate replacing pins). I'll probably just sell the Ultegra chain when I get it.

Buy the KMC, and use the link with the Ultegra chain, and then again with the KMC chain when the Ultegra wears out.

Can I swap the new 6700 shifters onto my 6600 groupset without too much trouble?

I know Dura-Ace has hidden shifter and brake cables now, but howabout 2010 Ultegra? I'm running Tiagra right now, upgrading towards Ultegra would be a nice step anyway.

Thanks mate, as I was hoping, the cables indeed run along the steerer tube.

Just looked, and the Pedal Force deal actually comes with a 6700 chain. Not sure why exactly. That's a uni-directional chain though, I wonder if I can put a KMC master link on it...
