Why are there holes in my shoes?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well... That was helpful

1) Let's cheese out when it liquifies
2) Let's blood out when deep in the pain cave
3) It ventilates
4) It drains when riding in the rain

Obviously #3 is the most probable reason why the hole is there, which I did think of myself but wasn't quite sure. At least you guys (or at least I that's what I thought before I asked ) know what you're talking about.

A friend got awful blisters in a running race because his shoes didn't drain from the rain. Brooks got the idea to use Goretex. It was great in allowing shoes to breath but make them waterproof. The rain ran down his legs and socks acted like wicks the there was no place for the water to go.

You'll get better ventilation by perforating the uppers, not the sole. The hole in the sole is a drain hole -- really.

The trick is to tape just enough to improve your aero advantage without overheating. If you tape the whole thing over, you risk that, and bonking.

And use helicopter tape. It holds up better at high speed. That's what the NASCAR teams use on the front of the cars to make them more aero (and sometime repair damge) and hold up at 200mph speeds. It's expensive, but worth it in the long run.

Since this is bikeforums...
