Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Sunday (3/15) Ride

I didn't see a thread, so what the hell.

I intended to do about 40 miles. 18 miles into the ride, I see a friend of mine. We rode together and including a stop for a chicken fried steak, I ended up doing 73.5 miles. Totally worth it...mid to upper 50s and very light breeze.

108 km in the city, snow at first, then rain for most of the ride. i got a flat, someone else got a flat.. so we took a while.

classic long steady distance. or is it long slow distance? it was kind of both today.

1/10th of a mile, 33% grade - Fargo Street Hill Climb, Los Angeles. For once I was especially glad I had a triple. It was a nice coda to my 100 mile ride yesterday.

Some photos of the event are here:

Go BIG Blue: Oh Well maybe next Year. I'm a Ky Guy

Sundays ride started out wet cold and foggy. I had 51 miles on my computer when I finally got home. We had a new rider in our group today. A young guy working on his Masters at the local college. Before we started he ask if all the riders were going to be old or would their be any closer to his age. He thought he was going to show us something by sprinting early on all the climbs. He started to get weak on the last leg of the ride.

I was sucking his back wheel and when he wilted. I seized the opportunity. Road him into the dirt the last five miles of the ride. Makes a 52 year old geezer feel pretty good about himself. I've dropped 45 pounds since August of 08. All the young guys on BF are my inspiration.

80km, including 50 minutes of racing. Didn't finish because of a crash last friday, think I've got a bruised rib or something. After talking a pull it started hurting like crazy

It was misty and foggy here but I managed a tad over 64 miles.

We had an elderly rider with us so I slowed down to keep her company on part of the outbound trip but continued on when the group turned back. I ended up with a bit over 15 mph average but there were some good uphill climbs involved.

<obligatory dog rant>
And the damn dogs! Jeesh. What is it with people on designated bike routes that let their dogs run loose? One went after my leg twice. It was obviously confused by my moving leg because it couldn't figure out how to bite my calf. it eventually got it figured out just as I unclipped and almost split its little head open. Then it came back again! Luckily it had been put in on the return trip but the pit bull a few houses down had just been put out for its afternoon adventures and decided to give chase. That animal could run. It tailed me between 25 and 30 mph for a good 30 seconds and I fear that it wasn't to beg for a doggie treat.

100 miles down into the countryside around Keystone Heights, Florahome, Grandin; fields and lakes and a beautiful day. We had a dog come out into the road after us, and he ended up in the middle of the road, bewildered, as we split around him and one guy nearly ran him down.

One nice thing about a power meter is that it validates your "into the wind" efforts. You don't feel so bad when you are hammering along at 12mph into the wind when you can see that you are putting out more than 400 watts.

Pretty nice but overcast day here in the NYC area. Rode 42 miles up to Piermont on my own because I had to go earlier than the group ride I was really hoping to join, maybe next time. Great ride though, the weather was perfect for riding.

36 miles. I was very happy with that since it is only 4th time out this year (2nd on my new bike ). mid 60's in Denver.
I was tempted to make it a 60 mile ride, but I got a late start and that would have pushed me to 6:30.
Felt GOOD!

I did 44 miles, my first ride in about 3 months. Thought it would be harder than it was. Beautiful weather and conditions. I did run into another rider, which is a rare treat around here. He kept me honest and we kept up a good pace (by my standards) for about 5 miles before our routes diverged. I'd say it was about 40 miles of pure joy, and about 4 mi of some tough climbing, which was somewhat less joyful.

101.3 miles, 4,000 feet of climb in 6:10. Weird thing happened when I was 40 miles out, my I could no long stand out of the saddle, I was in a bunch of pain (this happened at a point where there were some 200 foot climbs that are around to 8-12% range), then by mile 60 no more pain and no pain today.....WTH?
