Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

riding on the side walk is a pretty good idea-provided your frame has "barbie" emblazoned across the top tube

Then they turned up some crappy music (pop/rap junk from the radio) and started doing a dance that was popular a few years ago. I asked him whether mommy or daddy bought his car. He didn't answer.

He looked like he was in high school, and he was driving some new S-Class (big luxury sedan), that has a base price of $90k. Ridiculous, no kid needs a car that nice.

It made me feel better.
It's not his car, he's borrowing his daddy's car. No kid would pick an old man S class over some pimp sports car.

I guess that's the most likely scenario. But would you let your kid drive your S class? I'd buy him some POS just so I didn't have to give him my 90k car.

Maybe that was his POS

I can think of plenty of cars worth more than that

I got yelled at today by a motorist to "get out of the street"

I told him "GO F YOURSELF" as loud as I possibly could while my buddy simultaneously screamed "SUCK MY ****"

It reminded me why cyclists make the best friends.

40 miles later he crashed into a bum on the riverbed... Karma?

IMHO, we should be making the driver feel guilty for being aholes. Not being aholes back. I believe you should smile and wave, and if possible explain yourself to the driver at the stop light and politely put him in his place for being a dcik.

I usually wave, or give a thumbs up, and then have a chat if possible. I never flip them off, that's a good way to get killed.

You're probably right. Then after a gentle explanation I could invite him to my local coffee shop and buy him a Carmel latte while we talk about the rest of the worlds problems followed by a coupled massage/ spa day.

Most people think spandex wearing cyclist are gay enough... What is the point of being a nice cyclist? People are always going to honk at you and yell and scream and get pissed because they don't understand.

An accurate, yet appropriately sarcastic response would be "This is a ROAD, for things with wheels. THAT's a sideWALK, for things with legs. Get it?" You have to speak slowly and in simple terms.

WTF

On the other hand, if you incite them to rage by reacting the way you describe in your earlier post, you now have the potential for serious injury as they try to run you off the road, at best, or simply hit you with their 4000lb vehicle!

I have used "thats why it's called a sideWALK not a sideRIDE" but I'm not sure they heard me. It felt better to at least say something.

I respond to people yelling stuff the same way as I respond to dogs barking at me, cos it's pretty much the same thing.

LOL, Geulph? Which main street? I ride through K-W's busiest streets in traffic, and I take the lane if I need to but with defensive riding and the "always assume they won't see you" attitude you can ride safely.

I refuse to move on the sidewalk for cyclists. **** 'em, get on the road or stay on the trails.

Did you report this to the transport company? This is a professional driver who needs to be educated.

Anyway I should have just blew it off, but it sure pissed me off.

Other than that, I got a nice 50 mile ride in.
Maybe he was just singing a line from the Clash's Know Your Rights

"That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen." was yelled at me yesterday by some old bitty in her car. I smiled and waved but inside was screaming a slew of profanity that would have curled her hair.
Granted, we are an unusual sight: tandem pulling a child's trailer, but I can't figure out why it would be deemed 'stupid'.

Kept nagging at me for the rest of the ride. Why? Why would someone say that? In the end I decided that her comment was based on her own ignorance, a void of experiences different than her own small world, and perhaps a lack of confidence in her driving abilities. Or perhaps she was just wanting to shame me for exposing my child to such a dangerous situation (how dare I bike with my child!)

I dunno. I don't have a snappy comeback in situations like this and I'm not sure how effective they would be anyway. Whether they are yelling insults or words of admiration .. they all get the same outward response: big smile and a wave.

Look, you're not helping the gay/european image here. How about you just buy him a beer? Not a good beer though, that's gay/european as well.
