Speedplay Pedal Question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay Pedal Question

What is the difference between the Speedplay Chromoly & Stainless Steel Zero pedals? There is a significant price difference but only a slight weight difference. Do the Chromoly ones rust?

I've been on the same set of Chromoly Speedplays for five years. So far so good, and no rust.

I've got the speedplay x-2s in chromoly, stainless steel and titanium. Unless I'm putting them on a scale (which I've been known to do) I can't tell the difference.

Living on salt water, a couple of miles from the Ocean, mine have rusted.

I have a pair of X-5's on my TT bike. Didn't ride it for 4-5 months and the pedals were frozen solid with rust.

Conversely, none of my X2's have had similar issues.

Good news is I shot a ton of grease through them, and after a couple of rides they now seem to turn as freely as they ever did.

There is also a difference in the type of bearings between the X2'sand the X5's IIRC.

I have the chromoly pedals and the black paint or coating comes off over time. If I ever rebuild the pedals, I will have the spindles plated or chromed.

Yeah, if you live near the beach or ride in the rain a lot, stainless is worth it. Otherwise, it shouldn't be a problem.

yes, cromo spindles can rust if the paint gets rubbed off.

the important thing is that you don't hose them down with WD-40 or similar because that kills the grease inside the pedal bearings.
