Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I thought I was going to be lucky to get a crankset for the frame and I was looking at having to wait until late summer to get it at the earliest. What else can I say. Big props for SRAM.
Wow, props to you

is there any way to determine if youve got a friday afternoon rear derailleur? a preemptive solution would be nice!

Do you actually think aluminum parts just tear in two for no reason.
No, only carbon parts...

Oh, Pcad...

FWIW, our experience with SRAM has been nothing but top notch.

I can say that I have been able to always get parts to rebuild shifter mechs that have been damaged or in need of replacement. Can't say the same for Shimano. No experience with SRAM stuff, but it sounds like at least they are owning up.

Good deal! I definitely think more of SRAM now.

Didn't think poorly of them before but definitely think well of them now.

I did hear a rumor about Albert Pujols becoming a Cub.......

To be fair, a Shimano or Sampy RD would have done the same thing if it got sucked in.
Correct. Same thing happened to my old Centaur RD only it sheared the bolt off and didn't break the derailleur itself. Cause: stiff link in the chain that didn't quite make it all the way through the pulleys.

Back in my MTB racer days Sram sent a body out from their Chicago location (I'm an hour South) with an XO rear der. to replace a carbon SL9 (or something close to that) that exploded...BEFORE THE SHOP CLOSED THAT DAY!!! So I have nothing but good to say about Sram.

FYI...I have a club member that cracked a Chorus rear mech body and he just bought a Record...I sent a picture of the der. to Campagnolo...they send him ANOTHER SUPER RECORD rear...only asked that we mail the broken one to them to see if they could use the info to make sure it never happened again. Kudos to them as well. Seems like failure=upgrade lately!!!

I've loved SRAM from the first time I rode a Cannondale with the components. I talked with them at the NAHMBS and they were just nice and really personable. One of the reps sent me a set of used Force brake calipers free of charge (unfortunately I screwed one up).

Them doing this just solidifies my faith in their company. I hope that they continue to keep up this kind of customer service. Maybe I just am gullible enough to drink the kool-aid.

Congrats

Wow. I"m really impressed. I've been a SRAM fan for a while now, but I still never expected them to come through to such a degree. Nice job.

Nice to hear SRAM made things right. This is not the first time I've heard of a Cannondale frame being damaged this way. A couple of years ago my SIL was training for a Team In Training ride, dropped her chain somehow and dented the chainstay. LBS said it wasn't safe to ride, Cannondale replaced the frame for a reduced price. Seems like they're kind of fragile.

That's awesome to hear how they're taking care of it for you - nice to know some companies still do things right.

It reminds me of back in the early 90's working for GM's warranty dept, I had to field calls and keep the dealers in line with company policies on repairs. Like a dealer in NM who had to wait a week in summer for parts to fix an old lady's AC, and wanted to get her a rental car because it was 110 degrees. We were supposed to say no, that her car was drivable without AC until the part arrived. Or all the shops that wanted to bill for new coolant on cooling system problems, when the procedure was to drain, save, and reuse the existing coolant. So I was supposed to tell them they could bill the customer for that if they wanted to but GM wasn't paying. Crap like that...it was a real fun job.

Anyway, I'll be looking harder as Sram stuff next time I need to upgrade or replace anything. Thanks for posting about it!

Congrats on getting this sorted. This doesn't happen very often.

My read on this is that it is a know defect and they are taking care of it (you).

You're very lucky. This looks like a classic rider error failure that could have happened for the reasons I suggested and several more. Having that one piece of information (about the pulley being gone but the bolt and bearings still attached) is what changes this from a NO WARRANTY situation to one where there may be underlying design issues.

Most likely SRAM has taken care of this from the production end but there are still a few suspect pulleys out there that they hear about from time to time.

Good luck and be sure to post pics of your new ride once it's built up.

That is GREAT news! Glad to hear it worked out for you. I had wanted SRAM since the first ride I took on it but didn't get it till I got my Tarmac Pro. I had heard good things from the shop about ther experiences they had with SRAM, sorry PCad. Glad to hear they go that far in resolving issues, and your LBS too for that matter!
