Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This does not prove anything since you will not get paid if you don't drive X amount of miles in a populated area. You only drive one car for the most part. Again... they will not pay you unless you leave the driveway. You also don't choose what is on your car.

Most riders ride less than a few hundred miles a year. Some ride a bucket full more around here but we are not the norm. How do you know who is who in regards to how much benefit/exposure your getting from rider A to rider B?

I choose what is on my kit. Some of my jerseys are cheaper because of the advertising. Example being Hammer Nutrition kits.

At the end of the day though.... really just doesn't matter one bit. Ride what you want and let your riding or lack of it speak for itself.

Plus it can be fun poking fun at each other on group rides based on a previous race...

So, getting dropped is only embarrassing if you are wearing Team Jerseys?

I find the "I don't want to be anyone's billboard if I'm not getting paid for it" attitude hilarious.

Does your jersey have a little PI on it somwhere? Billboard. The Cannondale "C"? Billboard. Etc., etc.

Do you actually own a jersey with ZERO labeling on in? If not, you are a billboard.

Oh, btw, does your bike have "Trek" or whatever on it? Billboard. Do your tires say "Continental"? Billboard. Do your components say "Shimano"? Billboard...

Do you listen to yourself before you write? Your talking the difference between brand names and advertising you loon. Sure my bikes have their BRAND names, let's take my Trek for example but it doesn't advertise for T-Mobile! If it had I would not have purchased it!! When I buy a car and dealer puts his advertising license plate frame on the car I promptly remove it; if the dealer put their decal on the back of the car, I ask them to remove it before I buy it...and they will. Likewise if I going to purchase a jersey and had a choice of just two with the two choices of either either purchasing a Cannondale jersey with just their brand name on one or their brand name PLUS an ad for Gatorade or whatever, I would buy just the one with their brand name and nothing else.

You sure resort to calling people names quickly.

I see no difference at all between my bike saying "Orbea" and my shirt saying "CSC". They are both advertisements. Just because you don't like the advertising on my shirt does not mean yours doesn't have advertising on it.

Do you ask the dealer to remove the brand badges and any body panels or styling that would make it identifiable as a certain brand of car? If not, you're advertising for them too.

Why don't you remove the Cannondale logo from the jersey? After all, that's free advertising for them.

To make a completely arbitrary distinction about something that's honestly a bit silly to even obsess over, then start calling names because you don't realize the logical fallacy of your statement seems a bit over the top.

No shame in getting dropped if you are a beginner. Someone who has team kit is obviously very involved in the sport. Now, for better or for worse, people do make fun of - to varying degrees - those who have more gadgets than game. So if someone shows up dressed like a pro, and gets dropped like a pyscho ex, people are going to snicker. I am not saying that is right or wrong... it just happens. I can see how it would be more embarrassing for some people.

Hasnt this thread happened once or twice in the history of BF?

I think you need to take marketing 101. What do you think a Brand is all about? Branding is marketing is advertising. You think think they put their name on the bike so you can admire it? Nope, you already bought it they could care less about you, they are after the people who want to buy a new bike and see 100 Trek's on the road and feel that it must be a safe choice to purchase.

Um, then your "drugstore racer" term makes no sense. Your disdain is for the guys who buy the fancy expensive stuff then don't race--hardly the "$1-$5 crap."

While true a brand name is form of advertising, it is still displaying a brand, they are not advertising for something else they don't make or sponsor, or maybe they do make but it's unrelated, such has GM use to own GM Financing, their cars don't have GM Financing anywhere on their cars or that they sponsor breast cancer research etc. Now IF I want to sponsor something then that is up to me to make that decision to have it plastered all over my car or jersey in this case of discussion...thus same for you, if you like sponsoring something then go for it. If you read my post you would have read that this is my own weird thing thus obviously it doesn't apply to you nor am I forcing it on you. So the hostility that I can't express my own opinion on this or any other subject is just loony. I not going to conform to you and you should not conform to me, I'm still living in America and I am free to think anyway I want; so come join my cult and we'll drink poison together so we can join God in a UFO following a comet.

And speaking of Loony, loon is more of a funny thing not a mean name like SOB or stupid or moron etc; but I can tell you would have problems with me calling you ignorant because you can't differentiate between stupid and ignorant.

That's pretty smart. Keep calling Mods stupid and ignorant and see where that gets you mister nice guy.

My grandfather used to call people a word he thought was just funny too. They didn't think it was quite as funny.

There's no hostility-your argument just makes no sense. Resorting to the "it's a free country" argument solidifies the fact that you're the one ignorant of this fact (see? I do know the difference).

Buying a branded product is also a conscious decision to advertise for that brand--same as deciding whether you keep a license plate frame on your car. The idea that it's OK to advertise for a company that makes something and everything else is "loony" is, well, loony. It's just an attempt to claim to be "above the marketing" when you're failing to realize that you really can't escape it.

See, another person that can't differentiate between the two words, and nor did I call anyone stupid or ignorant, but I could of used the word ignorant and been right if in the proper context.

I didn't know your grandfather, but some people take things too personally and need to lighten up in life; maybe (please note I said MAYBE) that's you, and you couldn't handle what your grandfather was saying because because your too uptight...let me repeat myself...I said maybe, I did not say that's you, I don't know you to know if your that way. I have to make sure I'm clear on the "maybe" business because I have a feeling you would probably take it the wrong way if I didn't. It's good thing some of you forum members don't live in New York City, Brooklyn, or Jersey area etc, because you couldn't handle the way they talk.

And there's my arguement because I can!!!!!
