Any of you AFRAID to wear fancy pro-type kits?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No clue what drugstore racer is, but I think I know what a pretend racer is...

I think there are 2 types of riders who would wear, for example, a full Quick Step or Astana or whatever pro-kit.

1. The guy who loves the team, follows them, whatever, like your average sport nut. Hell, I wear my USF Bulls jersey (didn't opt for the shorts) to "represent" my college.

2. The guy who puts on the Astana jersey and suddenly thinks he's the Lance Of The Bike Path! You know the guy, he'll try to suck on your wheel when you pass him on an evening ride. There's a few of 'em in our hood.

I don't know if I explained it very good, but surely you know what I'm describing.

Personally, I don't "wear fancy pro-type kits" only because I only own a couple shorts/bibs and I need to wear them with any jersey that's clean, so it's always a black bottom with cleanest jersey. I probably would feel a little pretentious on the first couple rides in a full Astana kit or whatever on a bike path, but probably would get over it pretty quickly.

I don't wear team stuff because I like the plain clothing, but I still wear jerseys and shorts. Do you really want to hustle in clothes, like ordinary shorts, that will get in the way? Tights FTW

Don't let him bait you umd.

This is the guy who told a Soldier and a former Marine that they aren't thick skinned, and that average guys from Brooklyn are tougher.

I have plenty of pro kits. I like collecting them. I have the old Bianchi, Mapei, Saunier Duval, CSC, USPS, Kelme and so on. I wear them so what. I don't have Regional, State, National or World Champion jerseys or leaders jersey i.e. yellow, green, maglia rosa etc. I don't wear them to pretend about anything. I like the color schemes or the former members of the team. So for me it's just another cycling kit to wear and remember the stars and water carriers of the past.

I need to make a note of this post so I can use it for the next 10x this topic will come up before years end.

Who are you addressing this to? I know it's not me because I would have never said that about any of our brave soldiers, and I'm extremily pro military.

I like the retro pro-kits.... like this Merckx kit replication in modern fabrics...

I'd rock that all day long!

I wear it all bro(Euskatel/ old Mapei/ Vini Caldirola/ old Banesto/Kelme)! You have to be able to pull it off, just like wearing regular clothes..gotta be able to pull it off. Who gives if you get dropped? Everyone knows your not a pro anyway. I always used to say,' If I can be pro, at least I'll look pro.' Do what you want and care less about what people think. Someone mentioned earlier that they get on the bike to relieve stress, not have more stress- I totally agree.

This by the way has been really amusing to me as well. Expressing opinions about not wearing advertisements and the insuing attempt to slam me for my opinions. Crazy man, crazy. And I NEVER dictated to anyone what they should or should not wear, just expressing my opinion about what I wear and why.

The answer is right there. Drugstore racers clearly wear team kits to deceive women and get laid. Obviously!

I can also imagine some people riding harder when they wear team kits because they feel inspired or it puts them in a mindset to try harder. That's what matters right? (I'm just pulling this out my bum)

I know what I think a pretend racer would be but I don't know what you think it would be. As I said, it can be anywhere along a whole spectrum from anyone on a bike to anyone who's not a pro. It's ok, I've lost interest, and you are only proving my point that it's a stupid term with no inherent meaning.

Ah yes, those silly guys. But do you think that the jersey makes them behave that way or do you think that people who behave that way wear the jerseys as part of their fantasies?

I do, because you are actually describing your opinion rather than hiding behind silly terms which you won't define.

I think it's pretty clear what he meant. I missed whether or not he or anyone has a problem with the "drugstore racer"... but I will say, it IS a blast dropping them on the bike path. Kinda dickish, I know, but, like passing guys on TTs, it's a blast. I blame my cycling partner for instilling the desire to embarrass them, when I'm normally not that competitive at all.

EDIT (because you wrote me back)-I don't know what makes them behave that way or whatever. I do know that some people probably get in some fantasy mode.

Let me add one last thing........

If these "drugstore racers" want to spend their moneys on fancy bikes that support my LBS and keep them running, and buy fancy kits that support cycling in general, and tool around on Saturdays or whatever, or fantasize they are Lance, I'm ALL FOR IT!

Keep the money flowing!

Going back to the OP, if you're concerned with riding in pro or team kit and getting dropped, then you might also want to cover the logos on your bike - Cervelo P2C Dura-Ace 2008, as noted in your sig. You surely wouldn't want to dishonor the great Cervelo name.

This is one of the strangest threads I've read, or at least skimmed. And its not even a full moon yet. May be time to go shoot off a few fireworks to blow off some steam???

I hear ya! Waiting for friends to go out and drink, eat, and be generally merry while the rest of town's at fireworks!

Hey, you are in my hometown, Tampa Bay. My mom said it's been CRAZY hot this year... how's the riding going?

I won't wear that stuff, and I don't think any less of people who do. That's their thing. However, if someone gave me some, or I won it or something I still wouldn't wear it. But that's just me.

I prefer mtb shorts and Underarmour shirts.
