Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Same Fixed Gear 'Hooligans' Riding with Lance

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ght=lance+mash

NEW VIDEO HERE:

https://www.mashsf.com/

--the same guys as in the Lance video. Now that they're in lycra and more 'like you' do you hate them less?! More?! The same?!

BUT: "Why don't they get a geared bike?! Howcome they'd want to even try that on a track bike?! (They completed the entire Tour, incidentally). Don't they know they're idiots for spinning down hills like that?! What kind of crazy kid would try to mash up hills with one gear?!"

AND: "Why do those kids play that darned 'rock n roll' music so loudly?! Why don't you worship my God?! Why can't everyone have the same skin color as I?!

A bike is a bike is a bike... maybe try and embrace all cycling and cyclists and try to hate a little less. The MASH guys did not see one of you riding with Lance, or doing the Tour of California on your road or fixed gear bike. However, the MASH guys respect all of you and hope you enjoy riding your bikes as much as they do theirs.

Enjoy.

Yeah, but every kid thinks they can hop on a fixed gear with no brakes and be a bad ass on the road, at least when people see Lance and get on a Madone and dress in yellow they don't run every light and buzz every stopped car like jackasses

Um...good for them(?).

I'm not sure I appreciate the gigantic "We TOTALLY have something to prove!" aspect of these guys.

Who the hell cares?

i saw these dudes bomb palomar. one kid was using his foot to brake. was impressive. yet i dont get the point of it all. they go through tires like nothing. they look ridiculous trying to keep up the cadence downhill and strain themselves going up. track bikes are for track racing. i can understand hipster commuting but a tour? a big palm to tha face.

Cool video. The MASH guys are all very strong riders and talented pilots, but they're also on totally different, much more distance-friendly machines for this tour in contrast to the earlier video from Austin.

Do any of these guys race? I bet they would be burly cross riders.

why do people climb mountains?

why do people write poetry?

why do people try to win hot dog eating contests?

why do people learn to juggle chainsaws and bowling balls?

It's just one of life's mysteries...

I don't know, as a guy who many years ago was active in BMX freestyle, skating and such... The kid in me thinks that is pretty bad ass.

im 22 and ride a fixed gear for commuting. fixed gear bikes got me into riding bikes as an adult. theyre great way to spice up a commute if you dont have to cover a long distance or take on any climbs. they are also fun becuase you can build up a really custom and jazzy bike for alot less ££ than a good rodie, so they are fun projects to build up.

with that said i used to ride my fixed all over, becuase thats all i had, but what i really wanted was a geared roadbike for long rides in the country and big climbs. doing this on fixed was possible, but i always had to gear far lower than i wanted to be able to ride for hours, and it was just wrong becuase its like taking a 911 off road. i eventially got enough money for my road bike and love it.

i still ride fixed for commuting, and its great to just blast a 10 miles on an 80" gear, but my road bike is for everything else and get alot more saddle time.

i dont like these mash guys though. i feel they are trying to proove somthing. you can do tours on fixed, but why do it?! ive also seen theyre DVD. it was really boring, just riding on bland american city grid sections, and not that fast. i also dont like that they glorify dangerous riding. its fine that they can get away with it, but this isnt somthing i want never riders to be emulating.

Fixed gear on the road can be fun, you should try it out sometime. Might not be great for pedalling form, but I found that it really helped me gain some muscle mass in my skinny legs. I used to spin away at 95+ on everything including the hills. Now i feel comfortable all the way down the 70s...and it's really just fun being out there on one gear. Cool vid, thanks!
