Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

'Gatorade Gum'

Do you remember this gum?

I would like to find some and try chewing it instead of drinking water. I could lose the bottle cages and the bottles and free up some weight.

What do you think? )

I remember that gum, aka GATOR GUM! Man it brings back memories! I don't recall it ever quenching my thirst like water or an electrolyte sport drink, but it was tasty. Your body still needs fluids and chewing this gum isn't going to do it. You can still get dehydrated, which you do NOT want to happen during a ride.

If you are still looking for the Gator Gum, I don't think they make them anymore. There is a gum that claims to "quench" your thirst called "Quench Gum", which are sold at Sport Authority. They are much harder to chew and the taste is not as good as Gator Gum in my opinion. This gum, too, does not provide hydration your body needs. It does, however, share the somewhat salty properties of electrolytes that were present in Gator Gum.

I remember that gum, but I think on a ride it would make things worse. It might fool you into feeling that you were hydrated and prevent you from drinking at all! That's assuming it worked as advertised (I remember chewing some, but can't remember the effect).

(and yes btw, I know the OP was just kidding around)

I loved that gum, but, sadly, they stopped making it in 1989. There is a Facebook page for fans, though: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gatorgum/35699828262

There are so many bad ideas here I'm having a hard time deciding which to shoot down first.

I remember buying that gum at Sports Authority around the mid 90's, so I'm pretty sure they must have made it long after 1989.....unless I was sold really old gum.

Ha. I wasnt really going to use it for hydration, but thought I would see what you guys thought.

I guess it would be a good way to drop some water weight!

I think for hydration purposes I think I'll stick to my Slim Fast & Everclear mixture on the road.

I remember that stuff at 7-11 when I was a kid. If your mouth was dry the gum's sourness would cause you to salivate like crazy, magically "quenching" your thirst. I don't know if you could get the equivalent of a 24 oz bottle per hour.
