Why aren't there women cyclists in the Tour?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That chart makes me want to use a powermeter just to see where the hell I land on that chart.

Is there any advantage to being female, except we (used to) die later in old age?
The more the competition is skewed towards endurance, the better women tend to do.
For example, Iditarod and the Death Valley to Whitney (Badwater) ultramarathon running race, have been won outright by women. It seems that women can handle long-term suffering as well as men.. maybe a bit better since they are overcoming the disadvantage of higher body fat and less strength.

They used to run the women's TdF in conjunction with the men- same day, shorter course (since the male organizers thought that women couldn't handle the full routes) but the woman's winner was on the podium with the men's winner.
There's a picture of Marianne Martin on the podium with Fignon, who is looking unhappy as usual.

Since that was in '84, she was the first american to win the tour, before Greg.

Height/weight charts are for sedentary people, not endurance athletes.

Another sport not yet mentioned where women are banned is Olympic Long Ski Jumping. Recently, a group of women, representing a host of nations, petitioned the British Columbia Supreme Court suggesting that the Vancouver Olympic Committee was denying the women rights guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights & Freedoms. The BCSC dismissed their charge earlier this month. The IOC also refuses to sanction women ski jumping in 2010.

I believe the women are appealing the issue to our SCOC.

And then there was the story about 10 years of the female umpire who, despite a stellar career in Triple A baseball, was refused promotion to the majors.

Can anyone say 'glass ceiling?'

Given a chance (operative phrase) I believe women can be as good as men at any sport not requiring out-right strength and speed (see e.g. many gymnastics events and hand-eye sports like archery, shooting and even motor racing). However, many so-called endurance sports, such as competitive cycling or most elite level running events, do actually require a high measure of strength/outright speed. Hence it's unlikely one could ever compete in the TdF.

For what it's worth, I had a road race earlier this year where due to a number of factors they combined the women's 1-2 field with our cat 4 field. Out of I think the 13 women that started with us, all but 2 were dropped.

Yes, women hold the key to the only thing men really want, when you get right down to it.

This statement really doesn't mean anything.

Every race is tactically different. Cat 4 men go off like cheap fireworks all the time, more experienced women may be more astute as to what is going on around them. Even the time trials would likely have different weather conditions, so times may or may not be comparable.

However, as it has been already stated, an elite male athlete is going to be faster and stronger than an elite female athlete. This is why there are male and female divisions in nearly every kind of athletic endeavor.

I have to think that if there were a female cyclist out there, who could improve a team's chance of putting their GC contender in Yellow, she'd be on a team. In the end, it's all about winning.

I was going to say something, but I got lost.
If I had a woman with me I could have gotten her to ask for directions.

Typical.

That doesn't mean women shouldn't race. But if you're wondering why they're not in the Tour de France, it's probably for the same reasons they're not in the NBA and the NFL.
