Why aren't there women cyclists in the Tour?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Um, better ability to multitask when presented with multiple sensory inputs?
Much better at perceiving and acting on social cues?
Wider and deeper social networks?
Better communication and cooperation skills?
Less wimpy - i.e. higher threshold of pain?
Less likely to suffer of a whole host of genetic diseases and afflictions that range from minor (color blindness) to life shattering?
Even when suffering from the same diseases, often having less severe symptoms and a better overall prognosis (i.e. shizophrenia)?
More likely to vote liberal?

There are many, many qualities women have that I admire and sometimes envy.

Most of the 'problems' I see women saddled with are a result of sexism and white male privelege. Hell is other people.

We dropped a lot of guys too...

This is from the perspective of one of the women

But…spanner in the works: we were racing with the cat 4 men and 16-17 juniors. This made the field a) much bigger, b) much sketchier, c) much faster. All the women had lined up at the back, but sensing that cat 4 men would like to go hard from the gun, I went to the very front

^ Well, she sure knew the tendencies of Cat 4 men. Balls to the wall for the first 10 minutes. If you can hang on there, you're sitting pretty until 5k to go.

Nice job! I'm still glad I'm a male, though. Day-to-day upkeep is easier, although I recognize that half of those factors are also just a gender role social expectation.

It started on the climb used for the TT that morning with the brisk pace up the climb set by your teammates Robert and Shane (although he was not on the team at the time). After the climb 3 juniors and one cat 4 got away and we let them get maybe a minute or two and didn't really start chasing until near the turnaround. There were a lot of short powerclimbs around that point that snapped most of the women off, including her. Once we caught the break is was mostly downhill/slightly rolling for a while and we just kind of cruised... that's when she nearly caught up but then the attacks started flying and she was gone for good.

As Eric said and as is evident from the power profile table I posted, women in general tend to be better towards the endurance end of the power spectrum. The FT column is the least gap between the men and the women and the 1m is the highest gap, and a lower 1m power is what is going to get you dropped when there are rollers and attacks.

LOL, that reminds me of an ex girlfriend. When her feelings got hurt, it was my fault because I did (or didn't) do something I wasn't (or was) supposed to. When my feelings were hurt, it was also "my fault" because I hadn't "made her feel" how she was supposed to feel. So in practice, all bad feelings were my fault. But now I'm going waaaaaaaaaay off topic, lol.

Not quite sure what you are questioning about my post.

Candice Applebee beat all the men in a standup contest last winter - on Oahu. She's a very, very good surfer.

Downwind racing is very similar to road racing as far as demands on cardio. Lots of intervals up near AT. There are some very fast girls here in the islands. As in cycling, the gals can't match the men at the elite level. The top girls can smoke 95% of the men though.

Probably a similar ratio to the punters on this forum.

Also, I'm actually watching the Tour, they listed the stats of this guy riding in it:

6'1, 148lbs. Isn't that grotesquely underweight? I was 135 lbs last year at 5'8.5" and I was a hair above underweight.
Higher tolerance for pain? That has to play a large part somewhere in the sports world no?

My girlfriend and her sisters are very involved in marathon running. I'm pretty active myself and am pretty fit, but no way in hell would I be able to run 26.2 miles... I can barely muster the 6 mile "Turkey Trot" come Thanksgiving.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm certain 99.9% of guys also have no chance of being competitive at that level no matter how hard they work. Gender is hardly the only inherited trait that affects performance.

Hair care certainly is easier/cheaper. Though women have been getting more practical in this department in recent years.

Yes. When a guy makes Firefly/serenity type references, it makes him a geek/dork. When a girl makes those references, it just makes her even hotter.

My GF went to the Apple store for some tech support. When the techie opened up her computer and saw that her wallpaper is a Serenity picture, he nearly fell over!

I caught some womans race when the olympics were on tv.

It was only after the commentator mentioned that they were woman, that I realized they were not men or juniors.

Seriously, when they are in full kits, helmet, glasses etc there are no distinguisable features to make men say, "wow, she is hot". Both have no facial hair, men shave their legs and the woman cyclists I have seen have bee-stings for tits....

I coach sports, male and female. I also watch quite a bit of sport live and on television. I'm generally obsessed with athletic motion and technique. I find women's softball more enjoyable than men's baseball, the athletic effort is more noticeable with the women, their movements on the field more elegant and free flowing, and they have more fun. I also find women's lacrosse more fun to watch than men's for similar reasons.

In my world, athletic success is made up of equal parts focus, effort, improvement and most of all enjoyment of the learning process and enjoyment of athletic movement. Being the best and stomping your opponent has very little to do with my definition of athletic success.
