Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Running is the HARDEST sport that I have ever tried, because it is purely a training sport. Most sports you are naturally talented at, but in running you can be naturally talented and still suck because you have a horrible work ethic. In running you can't coast, or stop and take a break if you want to be good. Runners hard work also carrys over into their school work, for example our high school cross country teams top 5 guys all have 4.0's except one, who has like a 3.5. So, running is in fact a sport just like cycling.
As a "recovering" distance runner, I'm with you on this. Running is TREMENDOUSLY difficult for all the reasons you mention and more. The jarring it does to your knees, ankles, back, neck, hip... etc. takes a terrible toll after several years. I guess that's why I bought a bike. lol. (I'm not insulting biking here folks... they are both difficult in their own way.)

One point of contention I have here is the notion of running 150+ miles per week. Pardon if I'm a little skeptical. I've spent years running with ultra-runners, men and women who consider marathons "training runs" and that kind of mileage is virtually unheard of... That's at least 21 miles a day, every day of the week... the human body just doesn't do that... not for any sustained period of time. Not to mention that there is a point of diminishing returns with running more than 100 mpw... the incidence of injury increases almost exponentially and the gain in performance is negligable. Anyhow, no big deal...

this happens every year
Ding...ding...ding....give that man a ciga....errr power bar.

You can set your watch..errrr calendar by the "anti-cycling" articles that come out in the month of July, we'll see at least another 4 or 5 articles talking all about how cyclists aren't athletes, how somebody like Armstrong could never survive playing football, or can't hit a homerun, etc.

Not worth getting your blood pressure up over.

This is America. The dominant American perspective on sports, like the American persectives on religion, politics, international relations or food, especially on trash networks like Faux news, doesn't really impress anybody anywhere else on the planet. While Europe watches soccer, America watches the WWF. 'nuff said.

Not to say that there aren't plenty of *real* athletes in America, this board is a shining example of that, just that the ignorant folk have mastered the "volume" trick...

Uhm...WWF is about the 40th most popular sport here. America watches baseball and football and basketball.

I don't know what's funnier, the article or people getting upset about it. My favorite line was:

"Among avid cyclists — a deeply annoying cult if ever there were one"

He surely isn't referring to any of us.

It may not impress, but they sure are enamored with us.

For the week of April 21, WWE Smackdown was the 6th most watched "sporting" event. It was ahead of game 1 of the NBA playoffs and also ahead of the NHL playoffs.

For the week of 6/21/04 - 6/27/04, WWE Smackdown was tied at 4th with Fox Saturday baseball.

Wrestling consistently beats other traditional sports in the ratings game.

Someone needs to tell the guy and his editor that bad sarcasm does not qualify as funny. And originality is definitely not the guy's forte -- this topic has been done many times before (and better many times before).

The guy's not a real writer.

Wrong response. He's obviously trying to generate a big response to impress his boss. He doesn't care if you love him or hate him, but if you ignore him - that might have an impact on his air time.

With bullet-proof vest secured, I'll sat this: Fox News is the only main-stream media outlet that consistently presents both sides of the issues. Fair and balanced! Why is it that cyclists tend to lean to the left politically? My other passion, aviation, is the exact opposite (with the exctption of Tom Daschle).
Don't know why that is either.

O'Reilley is not a "reporter" in the same ilk as Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, et al... O'Reilley is a COMMENTATOR, he doesn't pretend to just report the news... in other words, he doesn't have a responsibility to be impartial, he can and does give his opinion on matters.

He is very good at bringing in guests that cover all sides of an issue however.

Let's see, what should I watch.... WWF, NBA Playoffs, or NHL Playoffs? Hmmmm....

How about none of the above. I'll just turn off the TV, turn on the PC, and post random thoughts to a forum.....until FOOTBALL SEASON! TITANS to the Superbowl!

Yes, but OReilly is on dead center prime time on a major news network with his highly conservative commentary.

Wouldn't you think a news network to be liberal if they gave Al Franken his own show every night for an hour at 8:00 pm?

In the 70s, Frank Shorter and other top marathoners routinely did 140 miles per week. The trend in later years was to do fewer but more "quality" miles.

Perhaps, but as the state controlled medias in most of Europe or in Canada do not allow Fox News, most there wouldn't know.

Faux News is about as fair and balanced as a Stalinist-era political "trial".

(did ya like the way I managed to mesh the political extremes there )

I personally run maximum of 70 miles a week, but I'm going into 10th grade. The marathon runners that are in the hansons running project run up to 150 miles a week. In the Hansons running project they give you a job at their running shops, and all you do is run at least twice a day and devote your life to running. Some of the people are even good enough that they are training for the olympics. A person I know has ran up to 130 miles a week, or possibly more, but then he has mental breakdowns and skips running for a few weeks at random times. I hate running.. lol

Don't know why that is either.

My political affiliation has nothing to do with the fact that Fox News clearly has a right wing bias. It's fine if you agree with Fox News, but to argue it's fair and balanced is rediculous.
