Newcastle Cycleways is a very social club. But they're more for the slow and old. Lots of family and over 50 riders. Or were you looking for a roadie club? If you have a fat tire, drop me a PM or email for weekend rides.

More just seeing what is out there. Have a MTB as well (I need to put it back together, has been in peices since I got back from NZ with it). Looking at buying a new Roadie soon, but interested in doing some more riding (when time permits) whether it be road or off road.

Yep. And if you bring your bike over, I'll put it together for you. My wife and I ride to the beach quite a bit, but we also ride Fernleigh track, which is basically a big variety of bush riding up by Kotara. There's also Jesmond Park for some singletrack and jumps.

There are a couple of races at Kooragang. Friday nights sees Hunter Districts CC twilight racing, Sunday morning is veterans.

For a noob, try this ride. It is easy going and friendly, only a couple of little hills and they take it easy going up those. This ride is intended for people getting into group rides, and is a nice ride for experienced riders if you want to spin out a hard week of training and have a bit of a chat.

Day - Saturday
Start Time - 7am
Location - Hadleys complex carpark, Griffiths rd. Lambton
Distance - 40k
Route - Lambton-Wallsend-Sandgate-Nobbys beach-The Junction-Lambton.
Intensity Level - Easy to Medium

As for the Vets on Sunday, it has A to E grade, and F grade when the open invitationals are running. E grade is excellent for noobs, and has a variety of pace and character. It's the most orderly lower grade bunch you will find anywhere on the coast. D grade is a bit feisty and the pace can average over 40kmh when the planets all line up. Vets are very friendly but very tightly run ship. Don't be late or you miss out :)

Anyone? Tiger, Munchie? What the heck is "Quadmoly"? As in Redline quadmoly tubing. Nothing on Google.

Thanks for that, SJP. I can't imagine they'd use quad butted tubing on a BMX. It was also referred to as a proprietary blend. Is that a fancy way to say cheap-ass? I know it would be their own secret-sauce blend, but I'm wondering if it's good or bad.

For a racing BMX, I see no reason why you couldn't use something fairly light like some bigger diameter Columbus Zona or maybe even Life/Foco if you're smooth.

I could be wrong though - I've never made a BMX, and most of the stock ones seem to be made from waterpipe in China and cost about 300 bucks.

I remember back in the day there was a cool one that had an Aluminium front end and a cromo bolt-on rear end. They were cool. So were the SE bikes.

SE are still cool, which is why old school guys in their 30's keep paying AU$1000 for a Loop tail. But that's just silly. So what do you reckon about Redline's Quadmoly? They're not known for making cheap bikes, and for some odd (nostalgia?) reason I really don't mind steel over alu for my BMX.

Didnt know about there being some good tracks out the back of Jesmond park though. I take it is up the back behind the park itself? When you ride this are you using hard tail or full susp? I am fairly new to the whole "proper" mountain biking, but the bit I have done I have really enjoyed (mostly some single track at Queenstown and Hokitika NZ). I am riding a hard tail though (bought it mostly for touring NZ south island), and at times off the road I have seen the reason for full susp :)

Well when I pull my finger out and get my new bike, I will have to get my arse down there and try some of these out. The Noobie ride you posted above, sounds like a good start to test the waters with.

Yes, Fernleigh is the old railway track, you get to the top and hook a sharp left into the bush. Nice tracks, and you can even do a loop around to the beaches. Jesmond's pretty much the same - a sharp left off the paved bike track takes you into the bush. I haven't ridden it a lot, but it looks ok, and it's close. Saw a wallaby there, which is a big plus. Oh, you can walk to the John Hunter if you get hurt! I gave my wife the FS, so it's 2 hardtails and the tandem (also a hardtail) for me. I've been to Hokitika, and don't recall it being a MTB destination. We want to go back and ride Rotorua some day. Where do you live now?

I live out Elermore Vale at the moment, but about to make the move back into town towards Wickam way. There are some good tracks just outside of Hokitika (they had the southern classic race there last year apparently), so we rode a bit of that track. Was rather demanding and a bit scary at times. Managed to destroy both front and back wheels there as well, which required and overnight courier of some new rims :o Nz is an amazing place to ride. Over xmas we rode from Queens town up the coast to Grey mouth then across to Christchurch. An experience I will not forget.

Does the end of Fernleigh take you into Glenrock? I hear that is also good for some MTB action.

I'm scratchin Kariong from my morning rides after dying halfway up in a pall of car fumes and road dust. It was dead still, so the crap just hung in the air. Nasty stuff. Did the thrillseekers' descent of doom into Mooney Ck. Didn't see dead wallaby on the other side of the road with my little compliance light :eek: Thank gawd it wasn't in the downhill lane or I would've been orf in a big way. Get my 10W NiteStick on Thursday nite tho. That should help a little bit. Then the Luxeon... Mewhawhawhaw... back to the lab

You could probably say that about a lot of the towns up the west coast of NZ, but yeah I would imagine that is the place you are referring to. Glenrock walk, it is out that way some where, takes you down towards to beach. I believe it is mostly a walking track, apparently you can then walk around the headland to Merewether. Been many years since I went there so sort of forget exactly where it starts.

It's light enough from just after 6:00. I went down at 5:45 and there was just enough light to see the outline of the bridge at the bottom after coming out of the last turn. :eek: Otherwise known as 'impossibly dark'.

Nice and light for the return trip tho. Could read my HRM finally :) Started standing climb out of Mooney Ck in 38/17 and accelerated thru the gears to Somersby KOM in 38/13. Totally stuffed. Graph should be interesting.
