Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

8 speed cassette needs spacer?

I recently bought a used ultegra/open pro wheelset.

I tried installing an 8 speed cassette on it, but there seemed to be a little bit of side to side play in the cassette.

I went to the LBS and got a spacer, but now I can't put the lockring on it.

What gives?

I have an 8 speed SRAM and 8 speed shimano cassette. I was going to stick with the Sram.

Which end are you placing the spacer on. I know if I install the spacer first, then I can't fit the cassette on the freehub. I can only put the spacer on after mounting the cassette.
OR it could be right idea, wrong spacer. My spacer for a 10 speed is very thin, only a few mm, but it's the difference between side play and tight.

I would confirm the side to side play before assuming something else is out of whack. It could be that the freehub has some play or that the fixing bolt is loose. 8 speed cassettes should not require a spacer on a Shimano freehub unless someone has modified it somehow.

10 speed cassettes are the only Shimano/SRAM cassettes that require a spacer on a Shimano 8/9/10 speed hub. Actually, 7 speed cassettes require a 4mm spacer on a 8/9/10 speed hub too. But other than that, no spacers.

Got to admit, you've got a point. None of my Shimano 8 speed bikes or the one 9 speed bike require a spacer, only the 10 speed.

All cassettes/lockrings (7/8/9) I've dealt with are not meant to have a spacer between the outside of the cassette and lockring - the lockring has ridges on the internal surface that is meant to mate with similar ridges on the outside edge of the outermost cog - but putting a spacer between these two surfaces, you negate this engagement, I'd say disabling part of the locking feature of the lockring.

I ran into a similar problem recently - the "8-speed spacer" that I got from my LBS was just too wide. The freehub body had a flare/slope to it that made it so the expected spacer could not fit flush to the inside edge of the freehub - I just went back and got a smaller spacer and all was right with the world.

Which hub/cassette?

Took the wheel to the shop.

The owner and the mechanic confirmed that the little bit of play I felt was just the cassette body and wasn't an issue. When they saw my dumbfounded face, they showed me other wheels that had the same exact thing happening.

Weird...

That's not the case with my 10 speed. I've got a spacer on the end, between the lockring and the cassette and it is NOT grooved to latch onto the splines. It's a Xero light hub with a Shimano cassette.

That spacer should go on before the cassette. Someone assembled your rear wheel wrong.

Unless you are referring to the very thin washer as shown in the pdf.

I'd still ask them to confirm that the freehub fixing bolt is tight. If it did come loose, it could ruin the hub and your day. I've seen the same side to side play so I know it can happen but better safe than sorry in this case.

The hub wasn't moving.

I couldn't replicate it by moving the freehub body.

I tried

I'm confused. If the freehub fixing bolt was loose, you wouldn't see the hub move but with a cassette installed on the freehub, the cassette would appear to move relative to the rest of the hub. Are you saying that when you tried moving the freehub body without a cassette installed you could not see it move at all? But with a cassette on it you could? That could be due to the larger diameter of the cassette exaggerating the movement of the freehub.
