It's OK, you're new here. At least now you've learned about the too-cool-for-school faction who think that Cervelo is too "mainstream" for a real bike connoisseur... They're popular because they're top-notch bikes that are competitively priced in their classes, but got too popular for the hardcore snobs who need to ride something nobody else is riding.

Um... what? More substance? WTH? By "substance," do you mean design cues that were ripped off from more companies than the rest?
That "substance" is a Specialized Shiv front triangle and a P3/P4 rear triangle.

Look at the bikes it's competing with. The P4, for instance, is right in there price-wise with any of the big-name TT frames. The P2 is right in the thick of it. The R3 is quite low-priced compared to its competition (Pinarello, Ridley, Scott, Wilier, etc.).

Cervelo............R3 SL..............................900g.............$3,900 ($3,510 at CC)
BMC..................Pro Machine SLC 01.........950g.............$2,999
Specialized.......S-Works Tarmac SL3.......<900g............$2,900 <--this is a 2010 model, what a "steal"!
Ridley................Helium.............................900g.............$2,799
The Italians aren't included because they're in a league of their own when it comes to silly pricing.

Actually, no. All the "official" weight I could find for the SL3 was Specialized's 'module': frame, fork, headset, crankset, and seatpost, which comes to 2,047g (153g less than SL2).

I did find this, however, from a Charlotte, NC bike shop employee:

I sat though a few hours of classroom style presentations of Specialized’s 2010 road product followed by the remainder of the day riding the 2010 road bikes.
At the top of the line is a completely redesigned Tarmac SL3 with a frame weight of 870 grams (56cm).

Admittedly, I'm not a big Cervelo fan - more than other high end bikes they seem to have a large "poser" contingent, but bottom-line they are light and they perform. What else do you need? I guess you could pay a thousand more for a pinarello or merckx but then it's just pedigree.
My 2008 R3 sl 52cm was less than 800 grams and less than 3K. Cheaper and lighter than any of it's competition with a lifetime warranty.
What I also liked is that each year there isn't a new model. Cervelo designed in enough performance margin that I didn't need to worry about a marked change each season as with Giant or Specialized which make great bike too (disregarding the TT bikes).

Current Cervelo owners defending Cervelo are not impartial enough to reach an objective assessment. However, if you like to join the mindless groupthink and tell each other how great Cervelos are and how much you love your Cervelo, Cervelo.com has its own forum.
