Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sidi Genius 5 Mega + Speedplay Zero

Hi All,

My first post here. I have been searching around over the last couple of weeks trying to scrounge up any data I can find on this topic, but the replies have been few and far in between. I recently purchased my Speedplay Zeros and I have a pair of Sidi Genius 5 Mega Lorica '07 model. I believe the Sidi has the Millenium 2 sole. From what I have read, there seems to be a few people who have removed the insert/plate from the bottom of the shoe, and were able to reduce the stack height of the Speedplay Zero cleats.

As I attempted to complete this task en route to having "lighter" shoes and cleats, I ran across a problem. Beneath this plate of my shoe, there is nothing except a layer of cardboard that goes under my insole. The plate is "superglued" onto this cardboard layer with the three screw holes and an adapter for 2 bolt patterns. I don't know how others have attempted and succeeded in this endeavor, but I would sure like to know. I was reading through posts made by Cydewaze, but they were made a long time ago. It seems their shoes had an additional layer. Please see attachments for pictures of his shoe.

mine = top of shoe, insole, cardboard, plastic foot insert
his = top of shoe, insole, cardboard, rubber layer, plastic foot insert

Am I correct in my assertion that this is not possible with my current shoe setup? I don't understand what would happen if I removed the plate from my shoe. To me, it seems that if I were to remove the plate, I would be left with a huge gap in my shoe that exposes a layer of cardboard. Furthermore, unless I used some kind of glue or adhesive, I wouldn't be able to place another plate into the shoe or be able to screw the cleat down onto anything. Please help me out, any advice would be great.

Best,
CoAB

Don't screw with your shoes, not worth messing them up!

Yah, after seeing it, I didn't want to fidget with it much, but I realized that there has to be other people out there who have experience the same thing.

Just wanted to see if anyone else had done this to their shoe, and what their experience was like and if they had any pictures. Let's be honest, it's almost like having a "poor man's Zero Titanium" Always down for the ghetto modification if it can help.

I agree with the first part, don't mess with shoes if you don't know all the effects it will have on your overall fit and comfort. That's way more important than how much they cost which was probably under $200. Might be better to just look at the shoe you really want and buy that hopefully on clearance. GL

Anybody still watching this thread? I've been considering this setup -- Genius 5 + Speedplay Zeros, to go with my not so great knees.

Any thoughts on the setup itself? -- with or without the mod?

I have that setup - works great. No hotspots, supercomfortable even after several hours and ZERO knee pain.
