Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I had an inguinal hernia repair 10 days ago and most of my instructions involve not lifting over 10 -20 lbs. for anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks. The written material I was given had two somewhat different restrictions in terms of time and weight and the surgeon had a third opinion but seemed not to be familiar with the stresses cycling presents. Walking and stair climbing are unrestricted (except by pain) and IMO a stationary bike would probably be doable. I'm afraid of the possibility of an unplanned dismount more than the actual riding. Other people seem to have had varying experiences so maybe there is no one size-fits-all recommendation. I doubt any two surgeries are quite alike nor our our healing processes.

I had colon resection surgery on May 11 and took my first ride (8.3 miles) on June 7th. I was "lucky" in that mine wasn't an emergency so I was able to prep first. They removed 8-10" of my colon and sewed the two ends back together again. The incision goes from above my navel to well down below, something like 30 staples. The incision still itches from time to time, really annoying! I was lucky in that I didn't have any cancer. I lost 40 pounds prior to the surgery from being sick, have managed to keep 30 of it off, that's the real battle for me. Take it easy and good luck healing you guys!

Not quite abdominal surgery but I was back on the bike 4 days after a "scalpelless vasectomy". Against the 14 day recommendation from the doc of course.

Felt absolutely nothing immediately after the surgery...no pain, no swelling, no fever, nothing...in three days I could barely find the "incision"

My first ride after the procedure was 45 miles.
