Tarmac owners, have you ridden long distance on them and were you beat up afterwards?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I turned 50 this year and have been riding a 2007 hot red Tarmac for a while now, and I love the bike so much that my wife is jealous of her. Recently I have been having some lower back pain so I’ve been thinking about going with a shorter stem that’s a bit more upright in hopes of easing the stress on my back just a bit. Other than that I love the bike and can do 20+ miles on her easily.
Great thread here also, there’s some very useful information here.

I had an S-works SL2 that I rode regularly 60 miles. I rode one century with it and it really was quite comfortable for me. See picture below for setup. I'm 5"9" and ride a 54cm bike.

+1 tires will make a bigger difference than any frame. In fact I just change from a 23 to 25 from racing to just riding

Any thoughts on a stem like this on a Tarmac (I know it probably breaks all the 'cool' rules but I'm 50 now and that doesn't matter so much anymore)?

I thought it was interesting since I commute with my Tarmac and could rise the bars on my weekday trips to ease the stress on my back, then drop the stem on my weekend rides when I want to hall @ss.

My thoughts.......your bike should fit you properly and be comfortable no matter what your doing on it. You will be faster on a bike that you are comfortable on no matter if your bars are low or high. Get a proper fit and be done with it........

I ride my Tarmac EVERY day! I LOVE this bike. I'm sure there are better bikes, but this bike always performs for me, and I always feel great afterward no matter how long or rough the ride!

Me too. Love my Tarmac. To this very day (granted I've had it for only a week so far), it still surprises me just how easily it moves, as well as how fast and how light it is
