Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hello NickDavid,

Since you race (your Battenkill reference), I'll share this wedding day story with you.

I met my wife through a good friend who raced with me 20 years ago. He is my wife's cousin and he ended up being my Best Man. He came to pick me up from our condo the morning of the wedding. My bride-to-be and I were leaving for our honeymoon directly from the hotel where we were conducting the reception so I had luggage to put in my Best Man's car. When he opened the trunk he had a pair or two of bike wheels. I asked him about the wheels and he said something that sounded reasonable at the time.

We had pre-reception hoers d'oeuvres in the hallway outside the ballroom for our reception. Our guests got to enter the ballroom before we did so that we could make our entrance. The door opened and when we walked in there were a number of my cycling buddies and male relatives holding bicycle wheels to form an archway for our entrance. We have a photo on a bookshelf and every time I look at it I smile.

i got a custom ring for my lady.

1/2 carat diamond which i got from my dad from his first engagement and then i had a platinum band crafted to my specs with etching/engraving on the outside of the band... grand total $740 in 2004.

i think people that spend more than a couple thousand on rings are stupid.

There's nothing stupid about it. It solely depends on your financial ability. If I make 1 million per year, a 2 carat diamond is nothing but pocket change. If I make 50k per year, a 2 carat diamond is nearly half of my take home salary.

Nick David:

I am late to the party, but here is what I did. I took the wife to be shopping and we looked at some rings. I let her pick the style and mount that appealed to her. Then I got on the phone with buddies and found some diamond brokers. Ended up using a broker my brother had used. Set my budget first and told them what I could afford. Then they located some stones and I went out and looked at them. Ended up getting much more of a diamond for the same amount of money. She ended up getting the marquis cut and simple elegant mount she wanted. We are both very happy.
