Do your own research, don't listen to the advice of strangers on the internet. (Some of the stuff in this thread is really bad.)
If you look around at different diamond stores, you'll get a sense of what the different grades look like. Buying online will usually get you the lowest price.
The insurance on my wife's wedding ring is about 1% of its' cost annually - a no-brainer.

I live in LA, and we have a jewelry exchange here in Downtown. $1k was all I could afford at that time, and we lived happily ever after I got her another ring after we got married though, and after I started making huge $$$ Get what you can afford, and the more u spend, the better justification you'll get for spending the same amount on a new bike

What a lot of hopeless romantics we all are. God bless you all.
You can propose with diamonds, marry with gold, and retire like pure ignorant old eejits, or live a troubled life of romantic angst with cheese and love in cold tents - it doesn't change anything important. If you love someone you stick with them, regardless of gewgaws.

I guess this thread has gone on long enough without this link that I feel compelled to add it.
Apologies in advance for the 12 second lead in ad.

1 carat round brilliant cut diamond solitaire yellow gold
I look for diamonds that have a few small carbon spots that you can see. It makes the diamond look real and genuine. They also keep the price lower without affecting the "fire" a diamond should have.

FWIW, I've just been through the process of buying my wife a solitare for her 40th.
Size is king IMO above non-noticeable flaws or colour. I got a 1.13 carrat VS2 F colour diamond that also "fluoressed" - whatever that means!
A nice sized rock with flaws that you need a loup to notice (LOL - just like me!) for AU$6250 -

Well, I'm scheduling the "talk" with her mom. Providing that goes well, my single life should be on it's way to ending in just a few more weeks. I'm gonna miss it.

If you aren't singing "At last I get a chance to be the the person I want to spend all my days with." you might want to rethink the whole deal.

On Thursday my wife and I are celebrating my 27th wedding anniversary. Our wedding reception on New Year's Eve 1982 was a party of epic proportions.

You'll miss it occasionally, but it's not so bad with the right woman. Mostly, you may miss the random floozies.
Are you the same Nick David registered next to me for Battenkill? Cat5 U35?

In my experience the random floozies are more trouble than they're worth.

Bought my wife what she wanted though we discussed "our" budget.
If you cheap out on your wife it should be an interesting...though probably short hehehe...marriage.
LOL good luck, sounds like you'll need it.

If you need to talk with her parents before proposing, you should go the more traditional route and spend some $$$ on the ring.

If you have found someone to put up with all the cycling crap you should do everything to keep her. You will still get the wheelset as these things that mean so much to us guys always seems to show up no matter what. As for a women who will stand buy you...not so much. Spend the money get a nice ring make her happy and keep her that way. I bought what my wife wanted 15 years ago and she's been with me thru all my crap over the years the last three of which has been spending close to 20G's on bike stuff, pretty good trade off for a $1500 ring!
