Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can't believe it still goes on. Who's worse, the Freds, the Poseurs, or them's that point the finger?

The ones calling everyone else poseur or freds are the actual poseur or fred. IMHO
Completely and utterly moronic.

I would imagine that the more local shops that carry a brand, the more freds buy them. Poseurs are more difficult to predict since they know to look for the 'elite' names stickered onto on those $350 Taiwan carbon frames that they make fun of from ebay but pay $2500 for after the stickers are on them.

I own two Treks (yikes) because they fit me and I got good deals on them. At this point the bikes are certainly better than my abilities, but it's nice to look at them after a ride. I've ridden close to 2000 miles this year and I still feel like a poseur when some kid on a big wheel comes zooming past me on an uphill :-) The worst is when some old lady on an electric wheelchair passes me and doesn't even shout "on your left"

So now I find out that I'm not a man because I put my bike in my car. What if it's far, then would it be O.K.? If I drive 83 miles to do a 114 mile ride with 12,000 feet of climbing, am I less of a man?

I believe Doohickie is saying that the rules for being a poseur vary. That is just his version.

It's all relative...if I see anyone on a Scat or Fuji (not listed) I classify them as someone who is enjoying the sport while pursuing recreation and fitness.

If I see someone on a Colnago I classify them as someone who has more money than me.

If I see someone on a Pinarello I classify them as someone worth overtaking to prove that their $10,000 bike isn't 3 times better than my $3300 bike.

If I see someone on a Cannonadale, Cervelo, Giant, Felt, Specialized, or Trek I classify them as customers of an LBS who liked the sales person.

If I see someone on a Bianchi or Look I wonder where they bought their bikes and why.

None of the above are Freds. Fred is not determined by a bike brand. Fred is determined by the use of a Rapha woolen cap instead of a helmet.

We need a pool to "Define Fred"!!

Wikiipedia has my definition, More money then skill

"Recently, particularly in the US, a Fred is more often somebody with higher quality and more expensive gear than his or her talent would warrant. For example, a Fred could be guy with little cycling experience who watches the highlights of a few Tour de France stages, then goes to a bike store and buys a Trek carbon fiber Madone in Team Discovery colors, along with Team Discovery shorts and jersey, and then rides it on a cycling path at 15 mph (25 km/h)."

Earn your Cervelo don't just buy it.

A few years ago I spotted a guy who was in his late 50's and very out of shape on a Trek Madone I believe with the full Discovery Channel get up a block away from an LBS. It looked like he was on his first ride with his new bike and cycling clothes. I wish I had snapped a picture because this was a Fred by the Wikipedia definition.

I guess I am a Fred too as one poster described how they start off on a front suspension hybrid before graduating to a road bike.

hmmm with riders aging, we enter the realm of actual fredness vs. perceptual fredness. Turns out sometimes the old guy with the gut on a high end road bike just may have been a former Tour rider. Why not just ride and be done with it all?

I always assumed I am a Fred, now I have confirmation.

We need to define "Fred" and create a BF Standard (BFS) for that and other terms. ie "Fast" "Bombproof" "Average Speed"

You give me more credit for subtlety than I am capable of, DJ... I was just trolling a troll thread. I just wanted to stir things up.
