Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycle Computer

I bought a new wheelset that has a much narrower profile than my old one. I have a cheapo cycle computer that I used with my old wheelset, but I cannot get the tolerance between the sensors narrow enough for it to work anymore (LBS tried with no success as well). So, I need a new computer and I need advice on it.

I have heard good things about the Garmin 305 Edge. But I wonder, if I think I am going to end up buying a PowerTap down the road at some point is it a waste of money to buy an expensive computer like a Garmin (or do people ride with both?)? What are some other good computer set ups that I might not be considering?

Mavic Wintech ES has a sleek install.

But after buying an edge 705, I wouldn't go back.

I'm finding it hard to imagine this. What wheels do you have and what bike is it?

No, it has to fit.

I'm not sure I understand what the issue is with the other wheels, but regardless...

If you are thinking about going with a powermeter (whether it is Quarq, Vector, Powertap, or whatever), most of them are ANT+ compatible now, so I would simply search for an ANT+ computer. The Edge 705 is one, but I think there are cheaper alternatives out there (I think Trek/Bontrager) - and I think any ANT+ computer can display power, although storing it and loading it to a computer may not be an option with the cheaper options.
