Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Specialized Roubaix Riders: What seat post?

This is for the Specialized Roubaix riders in the forum.

Do you use the stock Roubaix seatpost (with Zertz insert) or do you use an aftermarket post? (I notice that the Thomson seatpost is about the same weight as the Roubaix post.) Why or why not? That is . . . what's good or bad about the standard Roubaix post?

I ran the stock one on my Roubaix for a long time. No reason to spend money on that if you don't have to. I was 200lbs and road the bike pretty hard and never had an issue with it.

I also use a Thomson on my Roubaix SL2. I've been using them for years and it's just something I automatically swap out.

I'm a Thomson guy, too. That's why I ask. As much as anything, it's because of the clamp.

Aluminum 400 mm post so I can fit a seat post rack when I want to.

Stock post on my 2006 Roubaix worked fine for me. Never had a problem with it (including the clamp.)

Stock for now. As long as the set back allows for proper fit I see no reason to swap it out just for the sake of swapping it out. I am a Thomson guy as well but the Spec post works just fine.

Both mine and the wife's are stock. I never have seen any reason to use aftermarket seat posts unless you damage the stock or are building a bike up from frameset alone. I can sweat the weight differences between most posts.

Bikes: aggressive agreement is what I ride.

I'm tall, and have a lot of seatpost exposed. The angle on the seattube pushed me to getting a post with 0 setback to maintain good fit. I went with the $100ish 3T carbon post. (looks nice, matches stem, was much lighter than the Specialized post)

Do you really notice a damping effect from the Zertz insert?

I'm using the stock S-Works post on my Roubaix Pro. Not sure I like the clamp, but as of now I see no reason to change. If I do it'll be to a Thomson.

Stock on my SL2. It works wonderfully. I also have a couple Thomsons but, never got around to trying them. No need to really, as the stock post works great.
