Pedals for a noob?

Crank Brother's are as easy as it gets... but to answer your question get the speed play light action set up if you can. Then make your way over to look or shimano campy or what ever you feel fits you the best .... but of the two you asked about for a first timer the Speedplays are your best bet.
my 2 cents is...the best would be to shoot over to Crank brothers eggbeaters or if you want some kind of platform you can look for their candies or the Crank Bros. Quattros ...

I like eggbeaters with MTN bike shoes. I like to walk like a normal human and I race cross in the fall.

i had a pair of look pedals when i was 12 years old or so and never had any issues getting in our out. ive since tried offerings from shimano, ritchey, and crank brothers (great for mtb) but i'm once again shopping for looks (24 years old now)

I put Look Keos on my bike when I first got it last month and almost fell over starting off in traffic, trying to turn the pedal so I could get clipped in. Back in the day, I road Time Mtb. bike pedals which were dual sided so I swapped the Looks out for Speedplays and haven't had an issue since. I definitely recommend starting out with dual sided pedals.
