Pedals for a noob?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bikes: Steelman road & a plastic Deda

Crank Brother's are as easy as it gets... but to answer your question get the speed play light action set up if you can. Then make your way over to look or shimano campy or what ever you feel fits you the best .... but of the two you asked about for a first timer the Speedplays are your best bet.
my 2 cents is...the best would be to shoot over to Crank brothers eggbeaters or if you want some kind of platform you can look for their candies or the Crank Bros. Quattros ...

I like eggbeaters with MTN bike shoes. I like to walk like a normal human and I race cross in the fall.

SPD-SL. The PD-R540 pedals are a great value, especially if eBayed. $44, new, with cleats, 99.8% feedback seller. Easy.

i had a pair of look pedals when i was 12 years old or so and never had any issues getting in our out. ive since tried offerings from shimano, ritchey, and crank brothers (great for mtb) but i'm once again shopping for looks (24 years old now)

I definitely recommend starting out with dual sided pedals.
I like Speedplays too. Easy to snap in (either side) a little float prevents knee/ankle pain or damage. Just 'cuz Lance doesn't use them doesn't make them bad.
