I beheaded a squirrel today

Has this ever happened to anyone? A friggin' squirrel leaped across the MUP and went head first into the spokes of my front wheel. I felt horrible. He was just laying there, head hanging on by a thread, tail going absofrigginlutely crazy.

RIP Squirrelly

They fry up real good.

coasting 12-25-09 05:18 PM

that's gross. how did it taste?

X-LinkedRider 12-25-09 05:20 PM

No actual collisions, but I have had quite a few VERY CLOSE CALLS. A deer jumped over my front wheel on my commute home once. I could touch it if I tried. Scared the living crap out of me.

Scratch that, I have hit a couple snakes on tour.

chefxian 12-25-09 05:22 PM

He shouldn't have been standing there

The squirrel commited suicide. Christmas depression isn't limited to humans.

enjoi07 12-25-09 05:32 PM

thats nuts

coasting 12-25-09 05:33 PM

google it, you are not alone. I have had some close calls, and fear a 20 mph endo on the local MUP.

Jakedatc 12-25-09 05:50 PM

Haven't done it but have come damn close. MUP squirrels are suicidal it's a fact

I once ran over a Possum. I was in a fast moving pace line and the crew member ahead of me did not call it out, but he quickly steered around it while it was crawling forward, but i could not in time. This came as a shock to me and the person behnd me, who also ran over it. I think I was the first and fatal blow.

Grumpy McTrumpy 12-25-09 06:02 PM

at least you didn't crash

pumpguy 12-25-09 06:03 PM

Lots of snakes and a possum. No squirrels........yet.:)

DataJunkie 12-25-09 06:20 PM

I had a squirrel bounce off my front wheel. Thank you for the lack of pictures.

Squirrels make very bad decisions. I had one run into my back wheel once. One of the guys I was riding with said it went head over heels off to the side of the road.

Doohickie 12-25-09 06:37 PM

I ran over a squirrel once. Ride over him. In between the wheels, right under the bottom bracket. Whew, that was close!

I've found an Incredibell Brass Duet is very effective in scattering squirrels when I'm on the MUP.

Avanti73 12-25-09 06:40 PM

never on my bicycles, but I did hit a fox-squirrel on my supermoto one weekend

Could have been a lot worse for you. Don't think it could have been much worse for the squirrel:

Good reason not to have those paired spokes...the distance between says "please jump in here squirrels!"

echappist 12-25-09 09:48 PM

the damn critter was probably asking for it & had a death wish drafted up. look on the bright side, the squirrel population is way out of control & you are just doing what its natural predators would have done :thumb:

I took the tail off a fuzz-tailed tree rat a few months ago. He ran right under my wheel - crossing 20 or more feet of open space between us to get de-tailed. He started about 3 feet from a whole clump of trees and bushes, too.

I've scrunched a rabbit once, but that's the only squirrel I've hit despite having them run out in front of me way too many times.

Was riding with 3 others and we were 2x2...
I was on the left and slightly ahead.
Squirrel made it past the front wheel of the rider beside me.
Ran head first into my wheel.
Bounced off the riders fork next to me.
Bounced of my foot and crank.
Then bounced off his crank.
Then scurried away between us and the two riders behind...

This whole thing played out in a few secs...

Best part was looking down as the squirrel went off my foot/crank...His little paws were splayed out as if he was trying to get a hold on anything...
