Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Trouble with installing a computer!!

This may sound noobish, I bought the Cateye Velo 5 recently - this is my first bicycle computer. Thing is though I can't follow the instuctions.

It says the sensor should be within 5mm of the magnet. I tried putting the sensor on the inside of the front fork, but then the sensor bangs off the magnet. Then I tried putting it on the outside of the fork and this is more than the 5mm required.

Im just a bit stuck, if you guys could help me, great

Thanks,
Ricky

Bikes: Too many bikes, too little time to ride

try moving the sensor & magnet up/down along the fork & spoke until you get the necessary clearance.

+1 (or maybe around the front of the fork). It doesn't need to be terribly precise to work properly.

Move the magnet and sensor up/down the fork blade/spoke until they are within the 5mm range.
Or place the magnet on the spoke and move the sensor on the fork blade...slide it towards or away from the magnet across the fork blade until it is within range then tighten the zip tie. You can make small adjustments as needed but NOT WHILE RIDING.

I couldn't get the 5mm of clearance for my cadence sensor on my strada and found a post in the electronics forum here that recommended adding a rare earth magnet it worked like a charm for me.

I made a spacer for my catseye sensor out of an eraser and some electrical tape to make it mostly water resistant worked great for filling it out to the right hight to detect the magnet.

The sensor doesn't need to be between the fork and the spokes. The magnet needs to be with 5mm of the sensor mark, and can be mounted to the trailing or leading edge of the fork.
