Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Junior Gearing

hey I'm a junior racer and want to run a 45x12 as my junior gearing instead of the traditional 52x14 so I don't have to keep swapping out my cassettes...I've heard of ppl running this 45x12 but haven't actually seen it put to much use in my local races. Does anyone know who makes a 45t option for a big ring that is compatible for 9 or 10 spd gearing?

If you're 18, you're not a junior.

Keep reading (the rule book). How is racing age defined? Next time read first, post second. There's enough misinformation around without any more being posted.

My understanding is that if his racing age is 18 then yes he is. If he is already 18 and has his 19th birthday sometime this year then of course his racing age would be 19 and he would no longer be a junior.

Being that it is mid-January, if he is currently 18 then odds are that his birthday has not yet happened. I assume that is where you are coming from with your answer...

From what he wrote, "I'm 18" it would appear his actual age is 18. I was thinking it's earlier in the year than it is so it isn't quite as likely as I originally thought that his birthday wasn't this year, 7%.

Yeah, that's what I figured (see post 9 )

I always thought that rule was a little silly (setting aside feelings regarding junior gearing in general) that 18 year-old are included as juniors, but then I realized it was so that there is 0 chance of a 17 year-old not being a junior.

Exactly what umd said. I have had this explained to me many times but race officials/my coach. If you start the season as an 18 y.o then you race with the 15-18 y.o's. Your racing age is your age as of Dec. 31 09 in this years case(from memory, not rule book).

No, once again. Racing age is age as of 12/31 of the current year (it's 2010). So your racing age is your age at the end of the year, not the start. Cyclocross is a different story though.

Cross is a different universe

I assume the racing age wierdness for cross is because the season crosses the calendar year.

Correct.

I'm currently 18 but my birthday is in August, meaning, my racing age is 19. See ya junior gears. It was (not) fun while it lasted...

Only in the 41 would a discussion about junior gearing turn into an argument over who is a junior

There was just a thread yesterday in the racing forum about junior gearing. This is one of those instances where a search works really well because the answers don't change and there isn't really much to discuss.

my birthday is not in the season. but the thing i dont get it why an 18 year old which is a legal adult run junior gearing. Wouldn't you assume that if your 18, you know how to spin circles and have the muscle to spin a big gear?

im not even racing in junior classes. Im doing battenkill and cant even enter the junior race because im a cat 5. so why is it better to be thrown into the cat 5 under 35 with junior gearing?

What does the age at which you can enter into a contract have to do with anything?

One shouldn't assume such things.

Doesn't matter. Junior gearing applies to juniors in regular categories as well.

Ok, thanks for clarifying. As I said in those other threads in the racing forum, the top juniors are going to make the race much harder than a cat 5 race anyway. So to answer hansel's question, yes cat 5 would be "better".

Maybe you can clarify something else... he said "cat 5 under 35." Is that really the case that it is limited to under 35? Usually there are open categories (any age) and masters categories (over the stated age), but I've never heard of an "under" restriction other than juniors. If it is actually an under 35, then I assume that there is also a cat 5 35+ ?

I'm not usually one to correct, but it's then.

Anyway, still don't know what you mean by "my birthday is not in the season." You are 18 now, yes? When do you turn 19?
