Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thoughts on Mercier Galaxy

I'm hoping to finally get a new bike with this years tax return (I'm currently on a dept store bike ), but I'm not going to be able to break the bank. What are your thoughts on the Mercier Galaxy at Bikes Direct? On paper it looks to be one of the best at this pricepoint, but I don't know a whole lot about roadies. I can't afford to go much more expensive than this, but I'd be willing to listen to alternatives near the same price....

Any thoughts or feedback on this bike?

I don't see anything wrong with that bike and it is at a good price point. BUT, whether it is a good deal for you depends on many things: cost of a similar bike locally, fit issues, support for routine adjustments (DIY or LBS), etc.

4 out of 6 bikes currently owned by me and my wife are from BD, but I know how to work on bikes and have this forum to fill in the blanks. OTOH, when a cousin asked for similar advice, I sent him to an LBS; Casters in Warwick RI. He has been very happy with this advice.

I think CL would be a great start. I see the Mercier Galaxy for sale all the time on CL. That way you can try before you buy. Check out the local WalMart, Costco, and LBS. Do your homework before you buy! If you choose to buy on-line you are rolling the dice. You may win, but you may lose too!
Good luck-
