Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Its 106 degrees here today. Pittsburgh might not be such a bad place after all.

It's not, weather wise. I just wish we'd get a little more sun. It always seems like the skies are cloudy.

I like the 2009 S2 color scheme over the 2010 S2 color scheme, just like PCAD's ride!

I thought so too. I rode a new S2 Ultegra a month or so ago and wasn't blown away. I was relieved that I did not feel the need to save $4,000.

Cervelo is a good bike and a $5,000 Trek, Specialized, BMC, Felt, and many others are also good bikes.

If you watch the Tour or other races, the winning rider of any leg is on a number of different brands of bike.

At the end of the day it comes down to fit, weight, components, quality and price.

That is a handsome bike!

I'm confused by the sizing of compact frames. Would you mind posting your inseam? (Mine is 32".)

The heat has broken and it is time to get back on my Cervelo

I have only been riding about twice a week in the heat.

Unfortunately, I ended up having pretty much the same experience as Dave. I'm not saying that a 51 cm Cervélo won't work for some people but it didn't work for me. I rode it almost 1,300 miles with almost 1,000 of those miles being race miles. Don't know what it is about how I sat on the bike but the front end just didn't grip and I had some dicey experiences in a few criteriums.

I took everything off of that bike and put together a Lapierre which handles as I expect from a race bike.

While Cervélos are far from rare, Cannondale and Specialized are much more common on race courses in SoCal.

The 51cm is indeed not a bike for most people it seems. Cervelo geometry is hard to compare to other bike lines because of the fact that all their sizes are listed with a 73* STA.

What is interesting is that the reach(horizontal distance from BB to center of headtube top cap) on a 54 is actually quite similar to most companies 50-52cm. The 51cm of Cervelo's probably has such drastically different handling because of the very short Front Center(15mm shorter than most).

Cervelo's 51cm has a reach of 370, stack of 522 and a front center of 558.
For example Cervelo's 54cm has a reach of 380, stack of 541, Front center of 573.
Felt's new 51cm size has a reach of 382, stack 513, Front center of 578
Cannondale's road lines in 52 have a reach of 382, stack of 529 and front center of 574

It shows that it is a tough call how to make small bikes. 2010 and previously, Felt's small bikes all had essentially the same reach, they just made the smaller bikes with a steeper STA and shallower HTA to compensate. Cannondale's 50-54 are within a half cm of having the same reach, so essentially when you choose a 50-54 you are choosing what head tube height you need.

Cervelo did something different by making more linear stack and reach sizing changes across their line. I'd personally try a 54cm first as I am inbetween their sizes.
