Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another cyclist sharing a water bottle picture

While many of us are getting socked with snow and brutally cold temps, our fair neighbors on the other side of the planet are in a heat wave.
Even Koalas are pan handling.KoalaSip.jpg

Some background on that photo ...

That photo was taken last year ... just before the devastating bushfires here. The temperatures were into the mid-40s Celcius for about a week, and then on Black Saturday, February 7, 2009 the bushfire swept through the area destroying 2000+ homes and killing 173 people. There are estimates that 10,000+ animals died in that fire too.

It was a very difficult time for everyone here ... including the animals. Unfortunately that photo brings back some very bad memories of last year. Although it was taken in South Australia, I believe, which was not affected by the bushfires, it was posted at the time of the bushfires.

This year, it is hot here, but not nearly as hot as last year. We have had one day in the mid-40s (early January), and today is the second day in a row in the mid-30s, which has happened a few times. But thankfully we have not experienced temperatures like those of last year. We've also had quite a bit more rain than last year. Last year the rainfall was about 12 mm for the year prior to the bushfires in this area. This year the rainfall is over 100 mm. Much better ... for humans and animals.

If you're interested in participating in an event that is contributing to the ongoing bushfire recovery/prevention in this area, you might be interested in this one ...

It goes right through the communities I live near ... and regularly cycle to and in. I live in between two of the towns mentioned, and will shortly head out to cycle to one or both of them this afternoon.
