Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I live in a very flat area and this is how it breaks down

Solo ride 18.5-20.5 for hour +

Group Rides stopping at lights and whatnot 21-23

Race 23.5-25.5

obviously different terrian matters. But the number of lights and stop signs in NJ doens't help my average either. Whereas somebody in Montana might not worry about these as much.

i don't understand the purpose of this thread. maybe i should start a parody thread "how long is a piece of string?"

i won't do it because that would seal my reputation of being a total idiot.

If I were to ride solo on a pancake flat, smooth road with no wind, I usually can maintain about 23 mph comfortably as long as the flat lasts, but in Oregon, that's usually not that far, maybe 10 miles or so. Over 30 miles riding solo over rolling terrain, I'm doing pretty well if I average 20-21 mph. I've had the occasional ride where I've averaged 24-25 over 20 km, and the fastest I've ever ridden was with two other guys for 30 miles where we averaged just under 28 mph.

I would say the range most cyclists that have ridden seriously for at least two years fall into is 16-24 mph, riding solo over a longer-than-TT distance, but that's just a guess.

All these numbers really mean very little about one's fitness or anything. There are too many other variables.

Just curious why people can't just ignore the thread or ANSWER the question. I consider myself a very average to below average 49yr. old rider. I ride in the Chicago area and average between 17-19 MPH for 1-2 hrs.

And if you race, tell me how fast your average speed is.

Just wondering, because I want to know if I'm going too slow, or rushing too fast.

Thanks a whole lot!
Kind of depends on the ride...flat? hills? etc?

OK, here's my answer ... as low as 13 mph (55 mile hilly mtn bike ride today), and as high as 30 mph (flat criterium), and everything in between. Was that helpful ?

Bikes: Cannondale CAAD9, Ritchey Breakaway Cross, Nashbar X-frame bike, Bike Friday Haul-a-Day, Surly Pugsley.

The overwhelming majority of my miles anymore come on my 11 mile each way commute. (No, I don't care how fredly that is.) I ride half the time on my loaded down cross bike, and half the time "light" on my Cannondale CAAD9. Somedays I push hard, other days I pedal easy.

And for some reason, no matter which variable changes...either the bike or the effort...the average works out to about 16mph. Weird.

I can hit a sprint on the home stretch of 35mph, or I can spend the entire ride just spinning and chatting, and it still works out that way. Must be some strange space-time continuum disruption I pass through.

I've said it before and I'll say it again -- If I'm not cruising along at 20mph on flats with no headwind, I'm unhappy. 20mph is the minimum to make me happy.

that is so weird. i've noticed it too. I have now done 4 rides around a particular loop which is very flat so i can vary the speed depending on my effort. works out to be the same. i think if you take it easy it stays consistent and if you push hard, you compensate by slowing down to rest.

In the winter, our rides are slower usually around 16-17. In the spring and summer, my ride speeds increase, mostly because I'm riding 3 to 4 times per week.

Of course when I race, my speeds increase dramatically, typically turning in 36 to 38 MPH, especially when I install a second magnet.

I have no idea. I have never been particularly interested in average speed. It may be because I am a middle aged rec rider (48 yrs old) and am slow (I am). I am not trying to be a jerk but, as a new rider, I would not concern myself too much with this just ride more, learn proper technique and find fast people to ride with and these things will improve.

Cheers,

Brian J.
