I rode the Madone because a friend of mine wanted me to test ride it, so I did, I didn't want to buy it but also I didn't want it and I wasn't thrilled enough to be swooned. And I also said it's your money you can spend it anyway you see necessary to fill the hole in your life...ok, I didn't say it that way you can reread it to get the exact rendering, but essentially that's the deal. And part of that hole in your life is thinking that if someone doesn't have a bike or car or house or whatever as good as what you have then they must be poor miserable souls and maybe someday they can rise to your level. I can tell from reading your post I don't want to be anywhere near your level! For me to spend $6,000 for a bike that I could never make it go the way Lance does is not a wise expenditure of money when a steel or even a less expensive bike that weighs the same as the Madone would be a better purchase. Personally I have a gripe against CF bicycles but that's a debate that has raged wars here and I'm not going to enter into that. I have other investments that I pour my money into and a bike is not an investment in the true sense of the word which is the use of money for future profit...and a Madone is not that.

Man, this post is just riddled with insecurity and projection.

Appreciating and purchasing high quality goods =/= filling a hole is one's life. It may, but it's no certainty. If you think otherwise, it says more about you than anything else.

...and I find it funny that your post, monastic from the start, ends with a comment that a true investment must include monetary returns. Wow.

Pcad, nice day for a ride though you may still run into some wet spots.

Oh the retro-grouch defense. Perhaps we should find someone from the generation before yours who would say the same about the products and music you like.

It's really simple isn't it? If you like to ride you buy a bike that will make your ride the most efficient and comfortable because it's an activity you do often. If you're a poser then you just spent a lot of money on something that will spend more time leaning against your bedroom wall than being ridden. What this means to me? Not much because in the end none of that matters in the great scheme of things so just ride your bike and leave everything else by the wayside.

Grumpy McTrumpy 02-21-10 09:15 AM

I don't like Led Zeppelin (or any rock for that matter).

I don't consider myself a throwback.

Even if you have the cash? You realize you can't take it with you? The whole point of amassing money is so you can buy things you really value. Besides, if you ride enough, your cost per mile will be lower than most people on entry level bikes. You'll probably be a lot healthier too which is not only more fun, but can save you loads on health expenses. You don't need a hole in your life to enjoy nice stuff.

i hope you type all of your letters on a typewriter, drive a carburated car, are using oil lamps to light your house and are taking craps in the outhouse or you're filling voids in your life too.

now excuse me, i'm off to the outhouse.

I don't begrudge anyone their gear. If you can afford it, go for it. I own 3 high end carbon bikes and 2 ti. I don't have a gym membership, never did. Riding is my gym, hobby, salvation. Whatever. I understand Pcad's excitement about his new bike, but man is he such an attention *****. I get it!!! This doesn't make him a bad person as it is all in good fun, but when he puts himself out there, he should expect reaction like some. In fact, you don't need to be Columbo to figure out he enjoys the negative as it keeps his threads going. I commented on his Scott not out of jealousy (ie. 5 bikes), but more out of experience with back issues and Scott's notoriously harsh ride.

This is the difference between this forum and weightweenies or RBR. There, you talk shop, here is more like high school. Makes it more humorous so I don't know why some of you guys feign anger about negative reactions to Pcad's insanity when it is the exact dynamic he wishes to cultivate and you guys enjoy witnessing. It is one big hot F$#$#$#$ mess if you ask me.

How's the interweb working on your Atari 64 there bub?

(30 pages, I felt the need to get involved in this Seinfeld thread)

Because I indulge you guys. It is what you need to perpetuate these ridiculous threads. Notice how your response is typical of someone that cannnot deny the argument I presented. Cuz you know I hit the nail on the head. Why else would a mid level bike with mid shelf components get this much attention. He'd get 3 responses on weightweenies.

Grumpy McTrumpy 02-21-10 10:29 AM

I'd take twelve pcads over one self-important humorless whiner any day.

v70cat 02-21-10 10:31 AM

Lets not hijack this thread, I suggest that the dog start his own thread about how old is better than new.

As far as investments I won't let my wife throw out my old IBM XT, some day it might be worth a lot of money. I still think my 2007 Mac is better, even though it is "new".

I know that I like my CF bike and it is a healthy addictions.

Yeah, it would be a real shame to derail one of PCad's schwag threads

Truth hurts, doesn't it Grump? Still no denial of what I said though. Who is whining by the way?

Grumpy McTrumpy 02-21-10 10:39 AM

I don't deny you the right to say what you say.

I am opposed to your insistence that your opinions somehow carry more weight than anyone else's.

And no, it doesn't hurt.

No, this is the way you interpret it maybe. But I am not wrong about the dynamics on this forum. Nothing wrong with it, but when people respond to threads like this as I do, don't bust my ba!!s, it is what is expected by the Legend in his own mind, Pcad.

Didn't know the WW guys actually rode their bikes....

All of it is like HS.

A lot of what passes for tech talk is really guys taking things/themselves way too seriously. Their conversations are really no different than ones held between wannabe gearheads who endlessly debate what automotive snake oil and exhaust modifications will get you more speed.

v70cat 02-21-10 11:40 AM

They take it to whole new level tuning bike cages and the like.

Did you catch that, Pcad? You'd be a loser at weightweenies.

Suck on that.
